Khashoggi, Kenya and Trudeau
Ottawa – I once spent a weekend on Adnan Khashoggi's ranch in Kenya in illustrious company, with the owner in brief residence. It was in August, 1981, when prime minister Pierre Trudeau and his three sons visited Kenya, combining attendance at the UN Conference on New and Renewable Sources of Energy with some safaris.
For the first safari, Mr. Khashoggi invited the prime minister to the private game park on his extensive ranch/plantation near the Mount Kenya Safari Club (which he also owned). While my husband, who was Canada's high commissioner at the time, had argued strongly against accepting the invitation, given Mr. Khashoggi's tainted reputation, the lure of a pair of gregarious cheetahs and tame lions won the day.
Having been flown in from Nairobi by Mr. Khashoggi, we were housed in separate bungalows that were not particularly luxurious. I remember them also as unheated and damp from the rain, at a short walking distance from the main house. There, the manager, a young Egyptian, and several leather-clad Italian women with long blond hair welcomed us. In the evening, a group of American tourists staying at the Mount Kenya Safari Club were brought over to join us for a dinner of spit-roasted lamb, boar and Middle Eastern delicacies. Among the Americans were two congressmen and their families, who couldn't believe their luck of dining with a prime minister, a billionaire and some Italian beauties. It all made for animated company, with the elegant Mr. Khashoggi orchestrating the conversation.
The next morning, he was gone, and our attention was again directed to his innovative farming venture and the wellstocked game park.
