Emboldened by the regime changes experienced by other Arab countries during the Arab Spring, including those in Tunisia and Egypt, rebel groups in Syria tried to depose al-Assad.
So began, in 2011, the long, bloody civil war in which al-Assad fought to retain power.
During the civil war, he used chemical weapons on his own people. To date, nearly 500,000 Syrians have died as a result, and millions have fled the country, causing a humanitarian crisis. Both Presidents Obama and Trump, as well as British Prime Minister David Cameron, have denounced al-Assad’s reign of terror.
However, al-Assad is backed by both Russia and Iran. Experts believe that it’s only a matter of time before al-Assad will be tried as a war criminal.

Former Altoona-Johnstown Bishop Joseph Adamec dead at 83
ALTOONA, Pa. (WJAC) — The Most Reverend Joseph V. Adamec, who oversaw the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown longer than anyone else but who was admonished by a grand jury for covering up a massive child sex abuse scandal inside the church, died Wednesday at the age of 83.
The news was announced by the diocese on Thursday. The release said the Bishop Emeritus "died unexpectedly" but no cause was given.

Project PA | Defenses expert witness argues Sara Packer "dominated" Jacob Sullivan
The defense argues Grace’s adoptive mother Sara Packer is the mastermind behind the teen’s killing, painting Jacob Sullivan as an unwilling participant and a victim himself to sexual abuse as a child.
Jacob Sullivan developed “deviant sexual tendencies” after he was raped by an older man and woman as a child, according to forensic psychologist Frank Dattilio.
Dattilio believes that trauma contributed to Sullivan’s decision to rape and kill 14-year-old Grace Packer in 2016.
The defense’s expert witness testified for several hours inside a courtroom at the Bucks County Justice Center this afternoon.
Dattilio’s worked with a variety of criminals over his long career, but says, “this is clearly one of the most difficult cases I’ve ever had.”
The defense hired Dattillio to perform a psychoanalysis on Sullivan.
He concluded Sullivan has an above average IQ of 122, which falls in the superior range.
Despite that, he believes the 46-year-old “looked up to Sara Packer and liked pleasing her,” and believes the actual crime “was fueled by his relationship with Ms. Packer.
“The worst was brought out in him I think in part because of his relationship,” he added.
Their main argument: Packer used Sullivan’s weaknesses to dominate him when it came to plotting and killing the teen.
But during cross examination, District Attorney Matt Weintraub fired back.
He played an audio recording where Sullivan is heard telling police:
“She liked me to be in charge of our relationship.”
