Norway Cruise Ship Rescue Teams Diverted After Another Ship Breaks Down

Two out of five helicopters involved in rescue efforts for hundreds of passengers stuck on a broken down cruise ship off Norway have been diverted to deal with a second ship that broke down in the same storm-struck waters, authorities said. Both the second ship—a freighter with nine crew members—and the Viking Sky cruise ship are at risk of being battered against the rocky coast amid a massive storm in the Hustadsvika Bay. It was not immediately clear how many of the 1,300 passengers aboard the cruise ship were still awaiting rescue early Sunday, though authorities had earlier said about 100 people had so far been rescued. They said it would take several hours to airlift the passengers off the ship one-by-one. Videos from inside the ship posted online showed passengers desperately trying to dodge flying furniture and other items as the ship chaotically swayed back and forth, sending chairs careening into glass windows and knocking people over. One of the first passengers airlifted off the ship, Janet Jacob, told Norway’s NRK broadcaster that she’d “never experienced anything so scary.” She said she was pulled off the ship by helicopter amid winds that were “like a tornado.”
