The Cosmico hipster art/occult motel complex in Marfa is part of the former Comancheria, the empire built suddenly and mysteriously by a previously obscure native tribe, the Comanche.
The Comanche acquired horses, became the finest light cavalry in the world and conquered an empire larger than Europe, wiping out a half dozen tribes, in the space of a few generation.
The Comanche were short in stature, more Asiatic looking than the Apache and fought from horseback mostly using short powerful bows.
The Comanche are the reason the Mexican government encouraged Anglo settlers in TX they chased the Spanish, kicked the ass of every army sent against them beat them over and over in every encounter.
1) the Comanche had no gods. Other tribe all do.
2) They came out of nowhere, had no prior military experience of tradition
3) they conquered every Indian nation and the Spanish Mexican Army - anyone who got in their way.
This was an Islam-like explosion of aggression but unlike Islam the Comanche had no recent encounter with God or prophet to inspire them.
So what happen to this tribe of dumpy Shoshone gopher eaters overnight into the most formidable warriors ever seen in North America and made them terror of war like nations like the Apache ?
