Canada has granted asylum to two people who helped hide the American Edward Snowden during his run in Hong Kong after his revelations about the US surveillance agency NSA, said Monday an association for the protection of refugee rights.
"Vanessa Rodel and her 7-year-old daughter Keana are currently on a flight from Hong Kong that will land at Toronto Pearson Airport tonight," For the Refugees said in a statement. that they will travel to Montreal on Tuesday to settle as privately sponsored refugees.
Asked about this at a press conference, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declined to comment on a "specific case".
The Canadian immigration department also did not want to say more, but said in an email to AFP that "in exceptional circumstances," refugee claim files could "be expedited" compared to usual procedures.
Five other Sri Lankan nationals are still waiting for the Canadian government's response to their asylum claim, according to the National Post daily.
The former subcontractor of the NSA lives in exile in Russia. The United States charged him with spying and stealing state secrets.
