Gov. Jerry Brown's response to the DOJ immigration lawsuit, included a worn out claim that CA is the "economic engine" of the country. In FY 2015 federal tax revenue from CA was $10,408 per capita and 16.6% of the Gross State Product was paid in federal taxes.
National averages for FY 2015 were $10,234 per capita and 18.3% of GSP. So on a per capita basis, there is not anything special about the economic contribution from CA.

In 2016, CA was eighth in the country for per capita GDP (Gross Domestic Product). CA has a lot of people, but there is nothing special about their productivity. www.statista.com/statistics/248063/per-capita-us-real-gross-domestic-product-gdp-by-state/
