US Will Not Tolerate ‘Hostile Foreign Meddling’ in Western Hemisphere - Bolton

US National Security Adviser John Bolton, commenting on the situation over Venezuela, said that US would not tolerate what he described as "hostile meddling with the Western Hemisphere’s shared goals of democracy, security, and the rule of law.”

Earlier in the day a diplomatic source from Caracas told Sputnik that a group of Russian military personnel had arrived in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas to take part in consultations with country's officials on defence industry cooperation.

The planes arrived in the Venezuelan capital on Saturday. Media earlier reported that an estimated 99 Russian military staff arrived in Caracas on board two planes, which also delivered 35 tonnes of cargo. After the arrival of Russian Defence Ministry officials in Caracas, media reported that Venezuela had deployed S-300 systems.

The source said that Russia and Venezuela had not signed contracts for the supply of S-300 air defence missile systems to Caracas recently, noting that the systems were delivered to Venezuela in 2013.

The source highlighted that the visit has nothing to do with the ongoing political crisis in the country as it had been scheduled long before the latter erupted.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, while reacting to the situation with Russian visit, said Mondaythat "the United States and regional countries will not stand idly by as Russia exacerbates tensions in Venezuela."

Pompeo accused Russia of "continued insertion…to support the illegitimate regime of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela risks prolonging the suffering of the Venezuelan people who overwhelmingly support interim President Juan Guaido."

Venezuela has been suffering from a severe political crisis for around two months, after the leader of the country's opposition, Juan Guaido, illegally proclaimed himself interim president, contesting the re-election of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro last year.

The self-proclaimed interim president immediately received support on the part of the United States, which has also denounced Maduro's re-election, along with a number of other countries. Both Caracas and Moscow have been expressing concerns that Washington may resort to military means to oust Maduro from power.

China, Cuba, Russia and a number of other countries have endorsed Maduro as Venezuela's only legitimate president.

Aussie PM threatens social media companes with 'significant' penalties

Tech giants will be threatened with 'significant' penalties when they meet with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison in Brisbane this afternoon.

Representatives from Facebook, YouTube-owner Google and Twitter will meet with the Aussie PM, plus Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton, Attorney-General Christian Porter and Communications Minister Mitch Fifield.

"We need to prevent social media platforms being weaponised," Morrison said ahead of the meeting.

Morrison said if social media companies failed to show they were willing immediately to make changes to prevent the use of their platforms for material like the Christchurch shooting livestream, "we will take action".

Proposed laws across the Tasman would:

• Make it a criminal offence to fail to remove the offending footage as soon as possible after it was reported or it otherwise became known to the company

• Allow the government to declare footage of an incident filmed by a perpetrator and being hosted on a site was "abhorrent violent material". It would be a crime for a social media provider not to quickly remove the material after receiving a notice to do so. There would be escalating penalties the longer it remained on the social media platform.

Further details are pending. It's so far not clear if Australia or NZ will follow the lead of Germany, which designated social media platforms as publishers and threatened them with fines of up to 50 million Euros ($80m) if they failed to act on hate speech.

Morrison has already said he wants to put a multi-country social media crackdown on the agenda for June's G20 meeting.

MSNBC Anchor On Avenatti Arrest: "My Head Is Officially Going To Explode"

Monday has probably been the single most embarrassing day for members of "the resistance" and their partners in the cable news media since Nov. 7, 2016. Not only did Pulitzer prize winning journalist Glenn Greenwald trash the Russian collusion narrative as a "total fraud and scam" and "the saddest media spectacle I've ever seen," but the arrest of former Stormy Daniels attorney, one-time 2020 wannabe and prominent Trump antagonist Michael Avenatti has sent cable news reporters combing through their feeds to hastily delete any embarrassing tweets and photos.

After Trump’s Golan Heights Announcement, Israeli Politicians Now Pushing for US Recognition of West Bank as “Israeli”

In 2016, longtime Trump advisor, and current ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, said Trump would recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the entire West Bank if Israel “deemed it necessary.”

After U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he planned to unilaterally recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights — which is internationally recognized as Syrian territory — some powerful Israeli politicians are now petitioning Trump to also recognize Israeli sovereignty over Palestine’s occupied West Bank.

Though Trump casually announced that it was “time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty [sic] over the Golan Heights” last Thursday, he made the U.S.’ recognition of Israel’s claim to the territory official on Monday, at a signing ceremony that was attended by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump’s willingness to use his executive power to grant Israeli land grabs “official recognition” — such as in Jerusalem and now the Golan — has emboldened far-right Israeli politicians who have long been eager to annex other territories.

Please, sir, may we have some more?

Following Trump’s announcement via Twitter regarding the Golan Heights, Israeli MK Bezalel Smotrich, a senior Israeli politician and deputy speaker of Israel’s parliament, stated, also on Twitter:

For 52 years, we’ve also been thriving in Judea/Samaria [Israeli name for the West Bank of Palestine]. Also of critical strategic, historic and security importance. It is time that we recognize our sovereignty. With God’s help we’ll move this forward soon, and hope for your [i.e., Trump’s] support then, as well.”

Smotrich’s tweet likely highlighted the West Bank’s alleged “critical strategic, historic and security importance” to Israel because Trump justified his upcoming recognition of the Golan Heights as Israeli by stating that the Golan Heights have a “critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability [sic].”

Smotrich, who has lived almost all his life in illegal settlements in the Golan Heights and the West Bank, is one of the Knesset’s most vocal promoters of Israel’s annexation of the West Bank. MintPress reported last year on a bill authored by Smotrich that would allow for the government regulation of 70 illegal Jewish-only settlements and allow Israeli Jewish citizens to purchase land in Area C of the West Bank, which accounts for roughly 60 percent of the total West Bank territory.

Smotrich and his political allies in the Jewish Home Party — who form part of the current ruling coalition led by Likud — have recently been pushing for Israel’s annexation of the West Bank so overtly that it prompted the UN to warn last July:

After years of creeping Israeli de facto annexation of the large swathes of the West Bank through settlement expansion, the creation of closed military zones and other measures, Israel appears to be getting closer to enacting legislation that will formally annex parts of the West Bank.”

Syria: Trump’s recognition of annexing the occupied Syrian Golan to Zionist entity represents highest degrees of contempt for international legitimacy

Damascus, SANA-Syria has stressed its categorical rejection of US president Donald Trump’s resolution which recognizes the annexation of the occupied Syrian Golan to the Zionist entity, saying that the step represents the highest degrees of contempt for the international legitimacy and a blow to the international community.

“The US president has recognized the annexation of the occupied Syrian Golan to the Zionist occupation entity in a flagrant aggression of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic, turning a blind eye to all international reactions that condemned such resolution,” an official source at the Foreign and Expatriates Ministry said on Monday.

It added that the move comes as an embodiment of the organic coalition between the US and Israel in the severe hostility to the Arab nation which makes the US as the main enemy of the Arabs through the unlimited support and protection offered by the US successive administrations to the Israeli usurper entity.

The source affirmed that the US act deprives the UN its status and credibility through the US flagrant violation of the UN resolutions relevant to Golan, particularly resolution No.497 for 1981 which stresses the legal situation of the Syrian Golan as an occupied territory and rejects the annexation decision to the Israeli entity and considers it as null, void and has no legal impact.

“The US president has no right or legal capacity to legalize the occupation or usurp the others’ land by force… and this US hostile policy makes the region and the world subject to all dangers, ” the source said.

It added that the US resolution regarding the occupied Syrian Golan, and before it was the recognition of occupied Jerusalem as a capital of the occupation entity, and moving the US Embassy to it, all affirms that no one in the Arab nation is in a safe place of the US evils, a thing which requires the Arabs to take a serious and historic stance to pass the Arab bad situation and defend the Arab nation’s dignity, existence and rights.

The source went on to say that Syria, while announces its categorical rejection of the US resolution, affirms that the whole universe can’t change the historic reality that Golan was and still is an Arab Syrian territory, and its liberation, with all available means, and its restoration to the Homeland, Syria, is a firm right.

It added that the Syrians’ determination to achieve the liberation of Golan is more concrete today, more than any time before, having the same will that defeated the terrorist aggression.

The source concluded by saying that the Syrians, all over the homeland, as they always were, stress today, in the face of the black decision of the US president, their unity and cohesion with our resistant families in the occupied Syrian Golan, sharing with them the bitterness of the occupation and aggression as well as the determination to defeat the aggression and liberate the Golan.

Pentagon’s 2020 Budget Requests Upwards Of $550 Million For Syrian Operation. Troops Withdrawal – “In Progress”

In its Fiscal Year (FY) 2020 budget request, the US Department of Defense requested $1 billion of funding for its Counter-ISIS Train and Equip Fund (CTEF).

“The role of the US Department of Defense in Syria is to ensure the sustained defeat of ISIL, acting mainly“ with the help, together and through” our partners. Within the framework of the Ministry of Defense’s approach, priorities such as equipping, supplying and expanding the capabilities of local forces belonging to proven groups of the Syrian opposition are of key importance,” the budget for 2020 read.

This is relegated in the following way:

$745 million to assist the Iraqi Security forces to combat the ISIS they announced as defeated in the country at the end of 2017;

$300 million to assist the Vetted Syrian Opposition (the US-backed Kurdish forces such as the Syrian Democratic Forces, its core the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) [and indirectly the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK)] and other moderate rebels) who are to combat the ISIS which as of March 20th is allegedly defeated;

However, a further $250 million was requested by the Pentagon to fund a “border security force” in Syria. Thus, in total $550 million will be relegated to supporting US-backed forces in Syria, throughout 2020 to “ensure the lasting defeat of ISIS.”

“The FY 2020 CTEF budget request strengthens the security capabilities of DOD partners countering ISIS to secure territory liberated from ISIS and counter future ISIS threats by training and equipping partner security forces. The training, equipment, and operational support in this request will facilitate the consolidation of gains achieved against ISIS and prevent its reemergence,” the Pentagon budget request reads.

The over-all Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) budget request is $173.8 billion. The request for the fight against ISIS in 2020 is $6.9 billion, which is exactly $2 billion less than the sum requested for FY2019.

The total budget would be used for the following:

Sustaining personnel forward deployed to the Middle East to continue operations to ensure an enduring defeat of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and allow flexibility for a deliberate, coordinated, disciplined withdrawal from Syria. Meaning that withdrawal from Syria is still planned, but it would also be “in progress” in 2020;

Building the capacity of the Iraqi Security Forces and Syrian opposition forces to counter ISIS in support of the United States’ comprehensive regional strategy. Meaning that US has no plans of fully removing itself from Iraq in the near future as well;

The foreseen direct war costs for Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq, as well as the fight against ISIS stand at $25.4 billion.

This sum “reflects combat or combat support costs that are not expected to continue once combat operations end at major contingency locations. Includes in-country war support for Operation FREEDOM’S SENTINEL (OFS) in Afghanistan and Operation INHERENT RESOLVE (OIR) in Iraq and Syria. Funds partnership programs such as the Afghanistan Security Forces Fund (ASFF), the Counter-ISIS Train and Equip Fund (CTEF), the Coalition Support Fund (CSF), and Middle East border security.”

It is interesting to note that the Department of Defense spent more ammunitions in the fight against ISIS in Iraq and Syria than initially anticipated.

The 2020 budget request also reflects a $104.9 billion increase from the FY 2019 OCO enacted level of $68.8 billion largely due to the realignment of base budget requirements into the OCO budget and addition of $9.2 billion in emergency requirements.
