Okay, for talking purposes there is a libel case (although I doubt there is). Libel is a personal action, meaning a person's reputation has to be harmed. There is no class action by the public when Trump is harmed. The libel case is Trump's, not the public's.
The press can lie like hell to the public, and the public has no remedy at law. The legal boundary for lying is exactly defamation.
Also, FWIW, the legal standard of "actual malice" has nothing to do with actual malice. "Actual mailce" for defamation can exist even when the publisher has no ill will.
