Of course it's true. Without a ready media outlet, Avenatti threat to "go public" is hollow. But he has a substantial presence on CNN and MSNBC, who would, he threatens, give him the time to go medieval against Nike.
The claim isn't that MSNBC and CNN encouraged Avenatti to go after Nike. Just that his threat depends on their friendly cooperation.
Well known Clinton MO, and probably dirt common in spook land undertaking election and other manipulations. Seed the chatterverse with outrageous stories. When a factual allegation comes up, point to an easily disproven outrageous story and claim the true story is just another conspiracy theory.
