Trying to blame Orthodox Jews

Rockland County has declared an emergency over a measles outbreak, banning everyone under 18 who is not vaccinated from public places such as malls and churches. Those who violate the law will face misdemeanor charges.

Rockland County Executive Ed Day told a press conference on Tuesday, that the New York suburb would be taking drastic measures to stop the measles outbreak that has plagued its residents since October as he declared an emergency, effective as of midnight Wednesday.

Day said that the county was going through the longest ever measles outbreak in the US history, after the highly contagious disease was declared eradicated in the US in 2000. The outbreak is now in its 26th week and, despite health officials' efforts to encourage people to vaccinate their children, many are still reluctant.

Some put up fierce resistance, Day said, and the inspectors were being "hung up on or told not to call again."

"They've been told 'we're not discussing this; do not come back' when visiting the homes of infected individuals as part of their investigations," he said, denouncing this behavior as "unacceptable" and "a shocking lack of responsibility."

He also took aim at the old-fashioned way of building resistance to the disease – the so-called 'measles parties' – that have been championed by anti-vaxxers. Day noted that the disease can lead to dangerous complications such as brain swelling and premature birth and should not be contracted on purpose.

The ban means that children who have not yet received their first shot of MMR vaccine will be barred from public places, which are defined as a places that are intended for more than 10 persons, such as buses, schools, restaurants, malls as well as places of worship.

The law would be enforced as any other emergency declaration and those found in violation might end up in jail for to six months or with a $500 fine, Day said, noting that the law was aimed at encouraging people, not punishing.

"There will be no law enforcement and deputy sheriffs asking for you vaccination records. This is ridiculous," he said.

Some 72 percent of the population in the country have been vaccinated, which is far below the 97 percent threshold over which it is considered to be effective. The efforts to stop the outbreak have been primarily torpedoed by Jewish orthodox families, who refuse to follow the vaccination guidelines citing their religious beliefs.

Day specifically noted that county officials have talked to "over a hundred Rabbis" to promote vaccination. He noted that there would be no exemption from the law based on religious grounds.

So far 153 measles cases have been registered in Rockland County since October, which is nearly half of all the cases that have been reported statewide in the same period.

The declaration of emergency has faced a pushback from the anti-vaxx movement, while some criticized the measure as a step towards a police state.

Five people, including three high-level executives of Donald J. Trump's three casinos in Atlantic City, were killed yesterday when their helicopter crashed in pine woodlands on the Garden State Parkway near Forked River, N.J.

Moments before the helicopter plunged into the parkway's wooded median from 2,800 feet at 1:40 P.M., its main overhead four-blade rotor and its tail rotor broke off the body of the craft, the state police said.

Eight minutes earlier, at 1:32, the pilot was in radio contact with the control tower at McGuire Air Force Base in nearby Wrightstown, N.J., and did not suggest anything was amiss, the state police said. Opening of Investigation

The Federal Aviation Administration said it had no reports of any radio distress calls from the helicopter on its 70-mile flight from midtown Manhattan in clear weather.

A spokeswoman for the F.A.A., Diane Spitaliere, said the National Transportation Safety Board had opened an investigation into what had caused the overhead rotor, along with the transmission, to separate from the craft. Sgt. Anthony Aceto of the state police said the overhead rotor was found a quarter-mile north of the crash site. As of late last night, the tail rotor had not been found, the state police said.

In a statement, Mr. Trump said: These were three fabulous young men in the prime of their lives. No better human beings ever existed. We are deeply saddened by this devastating tragedy, and our hearts go out to their families.

The helicopter's pilot was identified by the state police as Robert Kent of Ronkonkoma, L.I., and its co-pilot as Lawrence Diener of Westbury, L.I. Their ages were not available, the police said. Paramount Aviation, an air-shuttle service at the Lincoln Park, N.J., airport, owned the helicopter. Calls to its answering service were not returned.

Earlier in the day, the three executives had attended a news conference in Manhattan to promote a junior welterweight boxing match on Feb. 3 between Hector Camacho and Vinny Pazienza at the Trump Plaza. The executives were returning to Atlantic City when the helicopter crashed about 35 miles north of the resort.

The flight, which began at the 60th Street Heliport on the East River in Manhattan, was proceeding routinely until the last moments.

A half-hour before the crash, the helicopter was picked up on radar screens in the control tower at McGuire Air Force Base in Wrightstown, N.J., as it was flying over Colts Neck in central Monmouth County, 35 miles south of Manhattan. The craft remained on the McGuire screens for approximately another 35-mile leg of its flight before it was switched to the radar space of Atlantic City International Airport in Pomona, a spokesman for McGuire Air Force Base, Sgt. Milan Christi, said.

A witness camping in the pines near the crash site, Thomas Murray of East Providence, R.I., told The Associated Press that he heard a loud bang, like a piston rod going, and saw the main rotor stop spinning break off. It went straight down, he said.
