What I've noticed helps, is don't completely control the conversation, but guide it along. People don't like being talked at, rather talked with. Lead them in and ask them questions. Make them answer. When they answer correctly, and you tell them they're right, that reels them in a bit more. Becomes more mutual.
Just a thought, not saying its something you don't already know.
Just a quick example of what I mean. This was just recently:
When talking to someone about the actual real Russia collusion I brought up Uranium One, so I asked them, now what is uranium used for?
They answered "nuclear", I said excitedly, that's right! They were drawn into the rest of it. It was as easy as that.
