Us’ Director Jordan Peele: I Don’t Want a ‘White Dude As the Lead in My Movie’

Get Out director Jordan Peele said that he doesn’t see himself casting any white men as a lead actor in his films during a panel appearance Monday at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in Los Angeles.

“I get to cast black people in my movies. I feel fortunate to be in this position where I can say to Universal, ‘I want to make a $20 million horror movie with a black family.’ And they say yes,” Jordan Peele said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Peele continued, saying that he doesn’t want to cast a “white dude” to lead one of his films, prompting the audience to applaud.

The Oscar-winning director, like many of his fellow Hollywood stars, often speaks out about political issues.

Last year, he called President Trump “racist” without naming specific actions of his.

“You know, the truth is the president is a racist, which is very sad,” he said, adding, “I’m disheartened by policies that are xenophobic and sexist…there are many strides backwards every day.”

Hollywood Writers Guilds Threaten Potential Boycott By Film Industry if Georgia ‘Heartbeat’ Abortion Bill Signed into Law

The Writers Guild of America East (WGAE) and the Writers Guild of America West (WGAWest) are suggesting the film and television industry will boycott Georgia if the state signs into law legislation that would ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat can be detected.

WGAE and @WGAWest oppose Georgia's abortion ban legislation #HB481. This draconian anti-choice law would discourage people in our industry from working in Georgia and could harm the state's vibrant film and television industry. Full statement attached.

In a tweet Tuesday, the two guilds wrote, “This draconian anti-choice law would discourage people in our industry from working in Georgia and could harm the state’s vibrant film and television industry.”

The groups added a potential threat of a boycott should the abortion bill become law:

This law would make Georgia an inhospitable place for those in the film and television industry to work, including our members … If the Georgia Legislature and Governor Kemp make HB 481 law, it is entirely possible that many of those in our industry will either want to leave the state or decide not to bring productions there. Such is the potential cost of a blatant attack on every woman’s right to control her own body.

The cost would be most deeply felt by the residents of Georgia – including those who directly work in the film and television industry, and those who benefit from the many millions of dollars it pours into the local economy.

The remarks by the writers guilds come just days after actress Alyssa Milano called for Hollywood film companies to boycott the state after its Senate approved the heartbeat abortion ban.

There are over 20 productions shooting in GA & the state just voted to strip women of their bodily autonomy,” Alyssa Milano, star of Netflix’s Insatiable, tweeted Friday. “Hollywood! We should stop feeding GA economy.”

“Governor Kemp, Speaker Ralston and the Georgia House of Representatives have it within their power to avert what is both an affront to women and potential economic harm to their constituents,” the writers guilds said. “They should prevent HB 481 from becoming law, not only to protect the vibrant film and television industry in their state, but because it is the right thing to do.”

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, a Republican, said after the bill passed the state Senate on Friday that the body had “affirmed Georgia’s commitment to life and the rights of the innocent unborn.”

According to Fox News, Georgia is considered the “number one filming location in the world,” Georgia Film, Music and Digital Entertainment Office’s deputy commissioner reported last week.

U.S. Must Put a Ban on Google Helping China Develop a Global Digital Dictatorship

Google’s decision to help China is paving the way for Beijing’s ‘digital dictatorship.’ Ultimately, Washington must make a political decision to criminalize such collaboration.

Google Is Conducting a Secret “Performance Review” of Its Censored China Search Project

Google executives are carrying out a secret internal assessment of work on a censored search engine for China, The Intercept has learned.

A small group of top managers at the internet giant are conducting a “performance review” of the controversial effort to build the search platform, known as Dragonfly, which was designed to blacklist information about human rights, democracy, religion, and peaceful protest.

Performance reviews at Google are undertaken annually to evaluate employees’ output and development. They are usually carried out in an open, peer review-style process: Workers grade each other’s projects and the results are then assessed by management, who can reward employees with promotion if they are deemed ready to progress at the company.

In the case of Dragonfly, however, the peer review aspect has been removed, subverting the normal procedure. In a move described as highly unusual by two Google sources, executives set up a separate group of closed “review committees,” comprised of senior managers who had all previously been briefed about the China search engine.

The existence of the Dragonfly review committees has not been disclosed to rank-and-file Google employees, except for the few who have been evaluated by the committees because they worked on China search. Fewer than a dozen top managers at the company are said to be looped in on the review, which has involved studying documents and technical work related to Dragonfly.

“Management has decided to commit to keeping this stuff secret,” said a source with knowledge of the review. They are “holding any Dragonfly-specific documents out of [employees’] review tools, so that promotion is decided only by a committee that is read in on Dragonfly.”

Google Asks for Meeting With Top U.S. General After He Slammed Them for Benefiting Chinese Military

Google requested a meeting with the U.S.’s top general, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, after he called the tech company out for conducting work that directly benefitted China’s military, while refusing to work with the U.S. military.

“The general is tentatively scheduled to meet with a senior Google official in Washington DC at Google’s request,” said Dunford’s spokesman, Air Force Col. Pat Ryder in an email on Thursday.

Dunford first revealed the meeting during a discussion on Thursday at the Atlantic Council, where he was speaking about great power competition with China and Russia.

Actor Chris Evans on Tom Brady: ‘I Really Hope He’s Not a Trump Supporter

Actor Chris Evans is once again voicing his dismay with New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, over the NFL star’s support of President Donald Trump. Even to the point where he’s undecided about whether he would portray Brady in a movie.

Evans has criticized Brady before, and this latest slight against the NFL player comes in a wide-ranging interview with the Hollywood Reporter.

The Avengers: Endgame actor told the paper that he understands that actors may not want to “alienate half your audience,” but he had to admit that he just doesn’t care what people he disagrees with think about politics.

That point brought the paper to ask the Captain America star about his constant needling of the Super Bowl-winning Brady for his support of Trump.

“His willingness to call bullshit on anyone abetting the disintegration of our republic extends to his home state’s favorite sons,” Hollywood Reporter gushed. The paper then asked if Evans would agree to play Brady in a movie. According to the Reporter, Evans “looked grim” at the very thought.

“I don’t know,” Evans said. “I really hope he’s not a Trump supporter. I’m just hoping he’s one of those guys that maybe supported him and now regrets it. Maybe he thought it was going to be different — and even that bothers me — but maybe there’s a chance now he just thinks Trump’s an absolute dumb shit, which he is. If he doesn’t, if he’s still on that Trump train, I might have to cut ties. It’s really tough.”
