Speed limiters for new cars in UK by 2022 under EU rules

27 MAR 2019

A range of new safety measures have been given approval by the European Commission and will be adopted by the UK despite the continuing Brexit debate

Speeding tickets may be a thing of the past as all new cars are to have a speed cap by 2022 under new EU rules.

They will be fitted with special devices that automatically make them keep to the speed limit as the mandatory technology will monitor road signs and stop motorists breaking the top speed.

The new safety measures, which include intelligent speed assistance (ISA), advanced emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance, have been given approval by the European Commission and will be adopted by the UK, despite the continuing Brexit debate.

Drink-driving will also be addressed by the new measures as well as driver anti-drowsiness alarms to wake drivers who are at risk of falling asleep behind the wheel, and distraction technology to detract motorists from using a smartphone while driving.

EU’s Parliament Signs Off on Disastrous Internet Law: What Happens Next?

In a stunning rejection of the will of five million online petitioners, and over 100,000 protestors this weekend, the European Parliament has abandoned common-sense and the advice of academics, technologists, and UN human rights experts, and approved the Copyright in the Digital Single Market Directive in its entirety.

There’s now little that can stop these provisions from becoming the law of the land across Europe. It’s theoretically possible that the final text will fail to gain a majority of member states’ approval when the European Council meets later this month, but this would require at least one key country to change its mind. Toward that end, German and Polish activists are already re-doubling their efforts to shift their government’s key votes.
