3 Philadelphia hotels sued in sex trafficking case
A Philadelphia attorney has brought a lawsuit against three hotels in the city, alleging they turned a blind eye while his clients, who were 15 and 16 years old at the time, were coerced into prostitution.
For one of the hotels named in the lawsuit, it's the second time facing a suit filed by the Philadelphia law firm of Kline & Specter PC.
The three hotels are the Days Inn on Roosevelt Boulevard in Northeast Philadelphia, North American Motor Inns on City Avenue in Wynnefield and the Roosevelt Inn, also on Roosevelt Boulevard in Northeast Philadelphia. In 2017, Kline & Specter sued the Roosevelt Inn under Pennsylvania's human trafficking law, passed in 2014.
"They knew what was going on….These aren't large resort properties," Nadeem Bezar, an attorney at Kline & Specter, who specializes in lawsuits involving human trafficking and child abuse, told NBC Philadelphia. He described how pimps allegedly threatened the young women in rooms at the properties.

Kraft’s lawyer on Florida sheriff: “He lied about” human trafficking
Posted by Mike Florio on March 28, 2019, 6:18 AM EDT
The legal battle has barely begun, but the P.R. fight between law-enforcement authorities in Florida and the Robert Kraft legal team continues.
In response to a recent admission by Martin County sheriff William Snyder that suspected evidence of human trafficking in connection with an alleged prostitution ring at local day spas simply hasn’t been found, Kraft’s lawyer has gone all in.
“Sheriff Will Snyder admitted that there was no human trafficking,” William Burck told USA Today on Wednesday night. “He lied about it. His officers lied about it. I don’t really know what to say. I’ve never seen anything quite like that before.”
Snyder nevertheless has doubled down on his claim that human trafficking is happening, even after admitting that he doesn’t have the evidence of it.
Kenya police rescue 25 women from suspected human trafficking ring
Kenya Police have rescued 25 Burundian women suspected to be victims of human trafficking in Ruiru, a town 25km northwest of Nairobi's city centre.
In a raid on Thursday morning, officers from the transnational organised crime unit descended on the Gwa Kairu homestead and arrested three Kenyan women.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) named the suspects as Mercy Kaaia, Lydia Nyambura and Susan Nyambura Ng'ang'a.
According to the DCI, the 25 victims were being held hostage at the compound in readiness for transit to Asian countries.
They were aged between 24 and 33 years.
During a courtesy call on the state’s Deputy Governor, Mr. Philip Shuaibu, Young said: “We are pleased with the important progress that has been made to combat trafficking in persons in Edo State, through the Three Ps: Prevention, Protection and Prosecution of those individuals involved in human trafficking.
“This is one of the issues the U.S. government is focused on, as it is a horrific crime and we recognize its long-term effects on people who are trafficked to other countries.”
He noted that there seemed to be high demand for trafficking persons in Europe.
He urged the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to step into the fight against human trafficking and the rehabilitation of victims.

Harrison-Morton Middle School Assistant Principal Joseph LiCausi alleges in a federal lawsuit that he was given poor performance reviews, stripped of authority as an administrator and passed over for promotions because he spoke out about the incidents.
The alleged retaliation occurred in a racially charged environment where white teachers, supervisors and students faced discrimination and hostility because of their race, LiCausi’s suit claims.
The suit says Brown placed the video, which was downloaded from a student’s phone, on a thumb drive in November 2016. The suit also claims that when a school resource officer reported to superiors that Brown shared the video, an Allentown police supervisor intervened to preclude charges against Brown.
School district solicitor John E. Freund called the allegations outrageous, untrue, distorted and defamatory.
“Obviously, we’re going to defend the case aggressively,” Freund said Wednesday.
