Google Is 2 Billion Lines of Code—And It's All in One Place

How big is Google? We can answer that question in terms of revenue or stock price or customers or, well, metaphysical influence. But that's not all. Google is, among other things, a vast empire of computer software. We can answer in terms of code.

Google's Rachel Potvin came pretty close to an answer Monday at an engineering conference in Silicon Valley. She estimates that the software needed to run all of Google's Internet services—from Google Search to Gmail to Google Maps—spans some 2 billion lines of code. By comparison, Microsoft's Windows operating system—one of the most complex software tools ever built for a single computer, a project under development since the 1980s—is likely in the realm of 50 million lines.

U.S. Must Put A Ban On Google Helping China Develop A Global Digital Dictatorship

Technocrats at Google love Technocrats in China much more than they love America or its Citizens. It’s time to force Google to break with China on oppressing its citizens via Scientific Dictatorship, aka Technocracy. ⁃ TN Editor

General Joseph Dunford, America’s top military officer, has announced he will be meeting with Google representatives this week to talk about the company’s assistance to China’s People’s Liberation Army.

Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, first stoked the controversy over Google on March 14 during his appearance before the Senate Armed Services Committee. “The work that Google is doing in China is indirectly benefiting the Chinese military,” he said.

“We watch with great concern when industry partners work in China knowing that there is that indirect benefit,” he added later. “Frankly, ‘indirect’ maybe not be a full characterization of the way it really is. It’s more of a direct benefit to the Chinese military.”

Google issued a firm denial in response to Dunford’s comments. “We are not working with the Chinese military,” a spokesperson said. “We are working with the U.S. government, including the Department of Defense, in many areas including cybersecurity, recruiting and healthcare.”

But Dunford is correct. The denial, even if technically accurate, is nonetheless misleading. Google maintains arrangements that it either knows or should know directly benefit the Chinese military.

For instance, in December 2017 the company announced the formation of the Google AI China Center in Beijing.

Due to Chinese ruler Xi Jinping’s announced policy of “civil-military fusion,” there is no longer any meaningful distinction between civil and military research, especially in areas like AI that Xi has determined China must dominate. As Bob Work, once U.S. deputy defense secretary, said of the new facility in the Chinese capital, “Anything that’s going on in that center is going to be used by the military.”

Similarly, acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan sounded the alarm at that Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on March 14. “The fusion of commercial business with military is significant,” he said. “The technology that is developed in the civil world transfers to the military world. It’s a direct pipeline. Not only is there a transfer, there’s also systematic theft of U.S. technology that facilitates even faster development of emerging technology.

Salvini calls for castration “for the molesting worms who raped a tourist in Catania”

Matteo Salvini, Italy’s hardline interior minister, has called for three young men who allegedly gang-raped an American teenager in Sicily to be chemically castrated if convicted.

“No leniency for the molesting worms who raped a tourist in Catania”, Salvini tweeted. “Guaranteed jail time and chemical castration!”

The case concerns three Sicilian men who are accused of gang-raping an 18-year-old American woman in the city of Catania earlier this month.

The suspects, reported to be aged between 19 and 20, were arrested last week having been identified from videos filmed throughout the evening on the group’s phones.

According to the alleged victim, who had been working as an au pair for a local family for three months, she met the men in a bar on the evening of March 15th and, on the pretext of going to another bar together, they forced her into a car and drove to a remote area where they took turns to assault her.

Scientists discover genetic mutation that helps block pain and improve healing

The results, published in the British Journal of Anaesthesia this month, revealed two mutations that simultaneously suppressed pain and anxiety and encouraged happiness, wound healing and memory loss.

The first mutation lessened the activity of a gene called FAAH, which is central to regulating pain sensation, mood and memory.

The second discovery, however, took researchers by surprise.

Its been dubbed FAAH-OUT — and while scientists previously thought it was a "junk gene" that was not functional, they now believe it "mediates FAAH expression".

To put it simply, it acts as a volume control on pain, mood and memory.
