U.S. Is Planning To Establish Military Base On Lebanon’s Coast – Report
The U.S. is planning to establish a military base in the Lebanese coastal town of Behdaidat in order to “monitor and deter” its enemies in the region, the Lebanese al-Joumhouria newspaper reported on March 27.
U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, personally inspected Behdaidat, which is located in the district of Jbeil, on March 23. During the unusual visit, Pompeo committed a half million U.S. dollars for the renovation of a historical church in the town. According to al-Joumhouria, this money could buy half of the 10km2 town’s properties.
Pompeo heavily criticized Hezbollah in the course of his recent visit to Lebanon. The senior diplomat called the Lebanese party a terrorist group and accused it of working to take over the country.
“Lebanon and the Lebanese people face a choice: bravely move forward as an independent and proud nation or allow the dark ambitions of Iran and Hezbollah to dictate your future,” Pompeo said during a press conference in Beirut on March 22, according to New York Times.
Experts told al-Joumhouria that that the strategic location of Behdaidat could allow the U.S. to monitor the coastal line and several alleged supply routes of Hezbollah. The experts predicted that if the base was indeed established, it would be only a part of a network of new bases that could cover a large part of Jbeil.
Al-Joumhouria’s claims remain unconfirmed. However, Hezbollah and its allies control the majority of the Lebanese Parliament seats. This means that they should be able to stop any US attempt to establish military bases in the country, at least by a legal way.

After Recognizing Golan Heights As Israel, U.S. Calls On Syrian Army To Withdraw From Separation Line
On March 27, the U.S. said that Russia should pressure the Damascus government to withdraw its armed forces from the separation line with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
“The United States and this Council cannot accept Syria’s efforts to establish its presence in the area of separation as a new norm … Therefore, the United States calls on the Russian Federation to use its influence with the Assad regime to compel the Syrian forces to uphold their commitment to the disengagement of forces agreement and immediately withdraw from the area of separation,” U.S. diplomat Rodney Hunter told a U.N. Security Council meeting on the Golan Heights, according to Sputnik.
This new demand came three days after the U.S. recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights. The region was occupied by the Israeli military during the 1967 war.
The separation line between the Israeli-occupied part of the Golan Heights and the Syrian governorate of al-Quneitra was established under the 1974 Israel-Syria Disengagement Agreement. A 1,000-strong U.N. Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) was dispatched to monitor the line.
During the U.N. Security Council meeting, Hunter insisted that the UNDOF should remain in place despite the U.S. decision to recognize Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights.
“This announcement does not affect the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, nor do we believe it undermines UNDOF’s mandate in any way … UNDOF continues to have a vital role to play in preserving stability between Israel and Syria, most importantly by ensuring that the area of separation is a buffer zone free from any military presence or activities other than those of UNDOF,” Hunter said, according to France 24.
Hunter’s remarks are an example of a typical U.S. hypocrisy. Washington rejects the U.N. resolution 497 which says that the Golan Heights are an occupied Syrian region and opposes to Russia-led de-escalation efforts in Syria, but jumps to support any agreement that could benefit Israel.

Israeli Air Force Pounds Syrian City Of Aleppo
Overnight on March 28, Israeli warplanes carried out a series of strikes on targets in the areas of Shaykh Najjar and Jibrin, and the Nayrab airbase in eastern Aleppo.
The Syrian Defense Ministry said that it had activated its air defense and shot down multiple missiles. It noted that the strikes caused a material damage only.
According to pro-Israeli sources, the strikes hit weapon depots belonging to Iranian-backed forces and caused some casualties. No precise numbers were also provided.
The strikes took place just a few days after the US decision to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights and amid the developing escalation over the Gaza Strip, which Israel is threatening with an invasion.
