‘Tragic loss’: 3 people killed aboard helicopter in Newport Beach crash are identified

Three people killed when a helicopter crashed into a home in a gated neighborhood in Newport Beach on Tuesday have been identified, authorities said Wednesday.

Joseph Anthony Tena, 60, of Newport Beach, Kimberly Lynne Watzman, 45, of Santa Monica and Brian Reichelt, 56, of Hollywood, Fla., died in the crash, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Two other people were injured, authorities said.

Residents said a woman was in the kitchen of the home when the helicopter crashed, damaging a bedroom, but no one in the house was hurt.

Tena, Watzman and Reichelt were among four people aboard the Robinson R44 copter when it slammed into the home on Shearwater Place near Egret Court in the Bayview Terrace community, authorities said. Police responded to the crash at about 1:50 p.m.

The four-seat helicopter went down shortly after taking off from John Wayne Airport on its way to Catalina Island, according to Joshua Cawthra, a senior investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board.

The pilot and two passengers were killed, Cawthra said.

A third passenger was seriously injured and was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana in critical but stable condition, hospital spokesman Jeff Corless said.

A person on the ground suffered minor injuries and was treated at a hospital and released, authorities said.

Authorities would not confirm Wednesday who was flying the helicopter.

Tena, nicknamed “Pepe,” is the only person identified in the crash who had a pilot’s license, according to Federal Aviation Administration records. He received his private license for helicopters in August 2014.

Watzman and Reichelt worked for the Standard chain of boutique hotels, which has locations in West Hollywood and downtown Los Angeles, a company representative said Wednesday.

Watzman was the general manager of the Standard hotel in West Hollywood. She had worked for the company for nearly 11 years.

Reichelt was the regional finance director for parent company Standard International since 2011.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our friends,” said Amar Lalvani, chief executive of Standard International. “Our focus now is on supporting their loved ones and our team during this difficult time.”

The FAA and NTSB are investigating the crash. Cawthra said no distress call was made from the helicopter before it went down.

FAA records show the copter was registered to Spitzer Helicopter LLC in Canyon Lake in Riverside County. Eric Spitzer of Spitzer Helicopter said he leased the R44 to Revolution Aviation, a flight school and touring company at John Wayne Airport.

Investigators have determined the flight was not part of a class or sightseeing tour, Cawthra said.

Revolution Aviation had been leasing the aircraft — one of 85 helicopters in Spitzer’s fleet — since April 2016 and flew it regularly, he said.

Messages left with Revolution Aviation were not returned Tuesday and Wednesday.

The copter was manufactured in 2003 by Robinson Helicopter Co., based in Torrance. The family-owned company’s two-seat R22 and four-seat R44 are popular among flight schools, police departments, sightseeing companies, ranchers and recreational pilots.

Bayview Terrace resident Paddi Faubion said Tuesday that she was in her home when she heard a helicopter rotor struggling to turn, as though the aircraft was losing power. She ran to her balcony and watched as the copter clipped the roof of a neighbor’s home and slammed into the side of another, sending up a plume of dust.

“It was like a train hitting a wall,” Faubion said. “You just knew something horrible had happened.”

Several neighbors rushed to the copter’s twisted wreckage, and two of them pulled out the pilot, Faubion said. Fuel spilled from the helicopter onto the street.

“I just put my hands on the side of the helicopter and prayed,” Faubion said.

The Los Angeles Times and KTLA contributed to this report.

Texas Rangers Hall of Fame pitcher John Wetteland indicted on 3 child sex charges

'''Texas Rangers Hall of Fame pitcher John Wetteland was indicted on three charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child Thursday.

John Karl Wetteland(Denton County Sheriff's Office)'''

(Denton County Sheriff's Office)

Wetteland, 52, was arrested in mid-January after a relative accused him of forcing them to perform sex acts on him three times beginning in 2004, when the child was just 4 years old.

It happened twice more in the next two years at Wetteland's home in Bartonville, about 10 miles south of Denton, the accuser told police.

The Dallas Morning News generally does not identify those alleging sexual assault.

Bartonville police arrested the Trophy Club resident on a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child on Jan. 14. He was released on $25,000 bond the same day.

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services referred the case to Bartonville police on Jan. 9, Chief Bobby Dowell said. Bartonville police issued a warrant for Wetteland's arrest, which the Denton County Sheriff's Office served.

The News has not been able to reach Wetteland for comment, and he does not have an attorney listed in court records.

Wetteland pitched with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Montreal Expos and New York Yankees — with whom he was named the 1996 World Series MVP — before joining the Rangers in 1997. He retired after the 2000 season and was inducted into the Rangers Hall of Fame in 2005.

Wetteland coached for the Rangers in the early 2000s, then joined the Washington Nationals in 2006. The Rangers said in January that they have no current association with Wetteland.

He also coached baseball and taught Bible classes at Liberty Christian School in Argyle from 2007 to 2008, but has not had any association with the school since, vice president of advancement Dedra Brynn said.

Why the Jussie Smollett Case looks like a Cover-Up to protect Kamala Harris

Today a somewhat shocking announcement came out of Chicago where prosecutors decided that they are dropping all charges against Jussie Smollett related to his staged attack early this year.

The news comes as quite a surprise seeing as how the evidence against him was seemingly airtight, including witnesses, confessions by those he hired, and physical evidence that all pointed towards his guilt.

And although many people are upset that Smollett’s wrongdoing is being swept under the rug for political reasons, this is probably just the beginning of a much bigger scandal.

Going back to the early days of the investigation, I wrote an article that suggested Kamala Harris’ connection to Jussie Smollett was much more than just circumstantial in regards to the hoax. In the article it shows what others had been digging up, including Harris sponsoring an anti-lynching bill in Congress. As you may remember, just a day after Smollett went public with his alleged assault story, Kamala Harris took to twitter to call it a “modern day lynching”. Not only that, Harris and Smollett were long time friends, and Smollett has even campaigned with Harris.

MAJOR newspapers must return their anti-Trump Pulitzers!?

For years, Democrats promised Robert Mueller’s report on Russian collusion would be “a bombshell,” possibly putting the president of the United States behind bars for high crimes and misdemeanors.

But when Mueller released a summary of his report this weekend, the only thing that exploded were Democrats’ heads.

It was a total dud.

Tesla loses its head of growth and referral program

Tesla’s head of growth and the executive behind the automaker’s owner referral program has left the company this week, according to sources talking to Electrek.

We reported on Praveen Arichandran back in 2016 when Tesla hired him from Facebook in order to build a growth team for the company.

Arichandran holds degrees in economics and computer engineering from the University of Waterloo.

According to his LinkedIn profile, he started his career at AMD and after a stint at BMO, he joined Facebook in 2011 and held several roles in the company’s growth team until joining Tesla in January 2016. At just 25 years old, he was Tesla’s youngest executive at the time.

At Tesla, he was Director of Growth Programs, which included overseeing the owner referral program, which was recently briefly canceled before being launched again earlier this month.

The referral program was extremely successful in generating sales for Tesla, but it got a bit out of control when Model 3 was added to the program. Tesla ended up having to give away over 80 new Roadsters for free and give significant discounts on many more new supercars.

CEO Elon Musk cited high costs when shutting down the program earlier this month and the team relaunched it with much more reasonable prizes just a week ago.

Sources familiar with the matter told Electrek that Arichandran quit Tesla this week. He has a new job lined up to be announced shortly.

He is the latest in a series of Tesla executives to leave lately, like VP of Engineering in charge of powertrains Michael Schwekutsch and CFO Deepak Ahuja, among dozens more over the last year.

To be fair, the turnover rate is fairly high in Silicon Valley and even more so in the sectors that Tesla operates in.

Tesla has yet to respond to a request for comment and Arichandran has declined to comment until his position at the new company is announced.
