Billionaire Sackler family sued by second US state over opioid 'catastrophe'
The billionaire owners of Purdue Pharma have been sued by New York state for allegedly triggering a US addiction epidemic with their marketing of the Oxycontin painkiller, just two days after the company agreed to pay $US270 million ($NZ398m) to settle similar claims by Oklahoma.
The amended complaint adds the embattled Sackler family to the state's lawsuit against Purdue and its biggest competitors and distributors, including Johnson & Johnson and Cardinal Health. New York says the defendants pushed doctors to issue prescriptions, lied about the risk of addiction and ignored red flags from suspicious pharmacies.
"Simply put, they put profit over patients," New York Attorney General Letitia James said on Thursday (Friday NZ time) at a press conference in Manhattan announcing the new claims. The Sacklers "profited off the suffering, the death of New Yorkers", she said.
The suit in New York state court, which James said is the most extensive of its kind in the US, adds to the potentially massive legal liability that has led Purdue to threaten filing for bankruptcy.

Trump-related school assignment prompts anger, death threats against Houston-area teacher: report
A Houston-area teacher has been criticized over an essay assignment appearing to be critical of President Trump. (Briscoe Cain / Facebook )
A Houston-area teacher was on the receiving end of death threats after asking students to review an essay that appears to be critical of President Trump, according to a report.
The teacher, who was not identified, had seventh-grade students read 10 student-written essays to determine what information could be inferred, the Houston Chronicle reported. One essay, titled “Trump Against American Values,” said some of Trump’s policies “have gone against what Americans value most, like freedom of opportunity” and that “we have witnessed insensitive remarks toward other racial and cultural groups.”
After reading, the students were given two multiple-choice questions. The first asked "Which of the following conclusions would the author most likely agree with?" One response was, “Donald Trump should not be president."
The second question asked students to complete the statement, "The reader can infer that …" One of the choices listed was, “Mexican Americans are the major group upset with President Trump.”
Texas Republican state Rep. Briscoe Cain was shown the assignment by a parent and blasted the district in a Facebook post on Tuesday.
"This individual has violated the sacred trust that every parent has with the State of Texas when they send their child into a public school," Cain wrote of the teacher. "They have lost the privilege of being in a classroom with Texas children, and forfeit the title of teacher. No teacher should attempt to indoctrinate a child to their ideology, no matter who is in the White House."
The parent, identified by Cain in his post as Chris Felder, said his daughter brought home the assignment asking for feedback.
"This type of non-factual rhetoric has no place in our schools regardless of who the president is," Felder is quoted as saying. "My children have experienced great teachers in the classroom, but I have also had to put up with those who see their roles as indoctrinators, not educators."
In a statement, the Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District said the teacher did not use "good judgment" and that the matter had been settled, according to the paper. It did not specify if any disciplinary action was taken
The district said it fielded several calls, including death threats, after Cain posted about the assignment on his Facebook page.
"Many of those calls were deeply disturbing and threatening in nature, the district said. "While we all agree that the particular passage should not have been used, the teacher made a simple error in judgment. Like all of us, teachers are human and make mistakes from time to time."

GOP rep calls for investigation into Schiff
Rep. Jody Hice (R-Ga.) on Thursday called for an investigation into House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), citing his past rhetoric about President Trump and his family in the special counsel probe into Russian election meddling.
“Isn’t that the information that we need to know?” Hice, who serves on the House Oversight and Reform Committee, told Hill.TV when asked whether he agreed with Trump’s recent comments calling for Schiff to be forced out of office, and he suggested the California lawmaker may have committed a crime.
“Let’s find out,” Hice continued. “Let’s open it up. Let’s bring those people forward.”
“As I said, we need to find out,” he said when asked directly whether he thought Schiff was a criminal.
“I don’t know all that he’s done, but what I do know is that he’s been on the forefront for two years claiming that he had evidence that the president colluded with Russia," he continued. "I believe thoroughly that was false. He was either misled, or he was misleading, and we need to get to the bottom of it.”
“So Adam Schiff needs to be one that comes forward. If he has evidence, put it on the table. So if he has committed crimes, we need to find out, and I think that is one individual, absolutely, that needs to be brought forward for a thorough investigation," Hice continued.
Hice's comments came as Schiff hit back at Republicans on Capitol Hill for calling for his resignation.
"My colleagues may think it is OK the president's son was offered dirt as part of an effort to help Trump," Schiff said. "You might think it is OK. I don’t."
Schiff's comments were in response to Rep. Mike Conaway (R-Texas), who said that the chairman had lost the confidence of the panel by putting out a "demonstrably false" narrative.
“The findings of the special counsel conclusively refute your past and present assertions and have exposed you as abused your position to knowingly promote false information,” Conaway said.
Attorney General William Barr said in a summary of special counsel Robert Mueller's findings in the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election that no evidence of coordination or conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Moscow was discovered.
Republicans have since seized on that statement, but Democrats have pointed to Mueller declining to say whether Trump obstructed the probe itself, according to the attorney general's summary.
Barr, however, said in the summary that he and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein came to the conclusion that the evidence was "not sufficient" to establish an obstruction of justice charge.

Ah, the super-rich, they live longer, eat healthier and their divorces are nothing like yours and mine. Take Ms Tatiana Akhmedov who is divorcing her husband, Russian billionaire Farchad Akhmedov, who made about $1.25 billion dealing in oil and gas.
In an ongoing legal battle that has lasted two years already, Ms Akhmedov, who claims to be a ‘simple housewife’ was ordered yesterday to return the $436 million yacht that a previous ruling had granted her.
The yacht called Luna was the biggest points of contention in one of the most expensive divorces in British history. The nine-deck ship with two helipads, a large swimming pool and a mini-submarine was seized last year at the order of a British court and handed over to his ex-wife.
Oil and gas magnate Farchad Akhmedov was ordered in 2016 to pay 40 percent of his assets to his former wife Tatiana Akhmedova so that she could continue living the lifestyle she had gotten used to. Mr Akhmedov meanwhile had fallen head over heels for a ‘younger’ model.
That ruling came from the London Supreme Court. Since then it has been referred to as one of the most expensive divorces in British legal history.
But Akhmedov did not succeed in paying the $594 million immediately as his assets were tied up. A British court then ordered Akhmedov’s assets to be frozen all over the world, including the couple’s super yacht Luna, anchored in Dubai.
But the lawyers acting for Ms Akhmedova now claim that the case is being referred to yet another Dubai court. “Ms Akhmedova will continue its proceedings with the Dubai courts,” her optimistic lawyers said in a statement. Will therefore undoubtedly be followed.

House Democrats are ready to accuse Attorney General William Barr of a "coverup" to protect President Donald Trump if he refuses to detail for Congress the information special counsel Robert Mueller III provided the grand jury during his investigation of Russia's interference in the 2016 election.
The pointed warning, delivered by senior Democratic aides during a media briefing Thursday, marked the latest sign of a potential legal standoff between lawmakers and the Justice Department over access to Mueller's complete findings. Barr has pledged to redact grand jury information from Mueller's report, which spans more than 300 pages, according to people familiar with the document, and that process is expected to take weeks.
That is far longer than Democrats say they are prepared to wait, and they have begun to express suspicion that the attorney general intends to prevent the public disclosure of information within Mueller's findings that may be unflattering or otherwise problematic for the president. It remains unclear what precisely Barr plans to deliver to Congress.
"If he does not include grand jury information in the summary or report or redacted report or whatever he gives to Congress, that amounts to a coverup," a House Democratic staffer told reporters during Thursday's briefing. "We do not want anything in the words of the attorney general. We want to see Robert Mueller's words."

Top UAE official says Palestinian state 'no longer feasible', calls for closer ties with Israel
A top Emirati official has said that a two-state solution to Israel and Palestine was no longer possible, as he called for closer ties with Israel in an interview in Dubai.
Anwar Gargash, minister of state for foreign affairs, mirrored statements from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump as he dismissed the longstanding two-state solution that until recently was the official policy of Arab Gulf states.
"A two-state solution will no longer be feasible because a sort of reduced rump state will no longer be practical," he said in conversation with UAE newspaper the National.
The top Emirati official called for dialogue and closening ties with Israel at an event in Dubai, and criticised Arab states' historic decision to boycott Israel over its persecution of Palestinians and colonisation of neighbouring lands.
“Many, many years ago, when there was an Arab decision not to have contact with Israel, that was a very, very wrong decision, looking back,” Gargash said.
“Because clearly, you have to really dissect and divide between having a political issue and keeping your lines of communication open.”
The UAE, along with the other Arab Gulf countries, have no official diplomatic relations with Israel, but recent years have seen Israel grow closer to Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain and Oman as their regional and financial interests overlap, especially in relation to Iran.
Reports have shown how Saudi, Emirati and Bahraini authorities have relied on Israeli spyware to target the mobile phone of members of civil society, often ending in activists' incarceration.
Israeli athletes have also recently travelled to Gulf Arab states in recent months to participate in international competitions, and Gargash predicted the trend to increase.
However, he also said a deeper "strategic shift" would take place, with positive consequences for the Palestinians.
"What we are facing, if we continue on the current trajectory, I think the conversation in 15 years’ time will really be about equal rights in one state," he said.
He added that the trajectory would shift so that in "10 to 15 years, the discussion will be what is the nature of the Israeli state, what are the rights of the Palestinians within that Israeli state, should they be equal citizens, is it sustainable that they are not equal citizens?”

Oklahoma City police were looking for a woman they want to question in connection with swastikas and other racist graffiti found at the state Democratic Party and Chickasaw Nation buildings in that city.
The graffiti was found at the Oklahoma Democratic Party headquarters and a Chickasaw Nation office, officials said. The spray-painted messages included the Nazi symbol, the numbers “1488,” which is frequently used by white supremacists and refers to Adolf Hitler, and anti-Chinese slurs.
The Democratic Party and the Chickasaw Nation condemned the vandalism, as did the city’s mayor, the governor, two Congressman and others.
“One bigot with a spray paint can or even a group of bigots do not speak for the hundreds of thousands in this city who stand strongly together against hate & bigotry,” Mayor David Holt, a Republican, said in a tweeted statement Thursday. “Let’s love each other just a little bit more today.”
Police released photos of a woman they are seeking for questioning in the incident.
“It is very disheartening to see our building defaced by this type of hateful message, which is so out of place for Oklahoma,” Bill Anoatubby, governor of the Chickasaw Nation, said in a statement. “We believe it is important to move past this isolated incident and focus our attention on the important work we do.”
Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt called the vandalism “abhorrent.” U.S. Reps. Tom Cole and Markwayne Mullin, both Republicans and Native Americans, condemned the images.
“As a member of the Chickasaw Nation, I am absolutely disgusted by the racist vandalism on my tribe’s Oklahoma City Area Office. I was also sickened by the incident at the Oklahoma Democratic Party headquarters,” Cole said.
“There is no place in our communities for such despicable symbols and language so clearly meant to threaten other human beings and those with differing points of view,” he said.
Mullin, a member of the Cherokee Nation, also released a statement.
“These actions at both the Oklahoma Democratic Party headquarters and the Chickasaw Nation Area Office are disgusting and will never be tolerated,” he said.
The Oklahoma Democratic Party said it was “devastated by the recent hate crime attack at our Headquarters this morning” and a cleanup was organized.
“We appreciate the outpouring of support for this cowardly act as the community comes together to denounce hate and bigotry,” the party said in a statement.
