I just tested it by hovering over image caps in Q posts. Both PNG and JPG images appeared upon hover; JPEG did not.

I haven't examined the site's javascript and I'm not going to, but presumably the explanation would be found in the javascript code that provides 8ch's highly responsive user interface.
