WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump’s energy secretary, Rick Perry, has secretly approved the sale of nuclear power technology and assistance to Saudi Arabia, Reuters revealed this week. Saudi Arabia is reportedly attempting to construct at least two nuclear power plants as part of its effort to diversify its energy sector and its economy as a whole. As part of this plan it has accepted bids from Russia, South Korea and the U.S. for the lucrative contract. Perry’s approval is known as a Part 810 authorization, which allows energy companies to begin the process of planning and starting preliminary work in anticipation of the closing of a formal deal in the future.
While the Saudi proposals are presented as civilian and do not mention nuclear weaponry, U.S. approval and sale of nuclear technology has been seen by many as a prelude to the development of a Saudi nuclear weapon, which could potentially spark a nuclear arms race in the region. Riyadh has long coveted atomic weaponry and has considered developing its own in its quest to maintain military dominance in the region. “If Iran develops a nuclear weapon, that will be unacceptable to us and we will have to follow suit” Prince Turki al-Faisal, former Saudi ambassador to the United States, told the Guardian in 2011, noting that the kingdom may feel “compelled” to pursue the option in the future, if tensions with Iran remain high.
In reality, Iran does not have, nor is it trying to acquire, nuclear weapons technology (something quietly conceded by both the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad and the CIA), and has lived up to its commitments to the International Atomic Energy Agency. However, any such move from Saudi Arabia might provoke a response in kind from Iran, its chief adversary in the region and would sound a death knell for the hopes of the establishment of a nuclear weapons-free zone in the Middle East. The United States has long accused Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons technology and has placed sanctions on the country.

Report: 95% of Palestinian children detained by Israel were tortured
As many as 95 per cent of Palestinian children arrested by Israeli authorities were tortured during detention, a new report said.
The Palestinian Ministry of Information said yesterday that the Israeli abuses against Palestinian children included beating, kicking, blindfolding and handcuffing them during detention as well as interrogating them without the presence of a lawyer or a family member, in violation of laws that prevent interrogating minors or extracting confessions from them by coercion.
According to the report, a majority of the Israeli violations against Palestinian children took place after midnight.
The report said the arrests are part of an intensive Israeli campaign targeting school children especially at checkpoints erected inside the occupied city of Jerusalem and at all entrances to Palestinian villages, towns, and camps in the West Bank.
According to the report, until 2015, the average number of Palestinian children detained by Israel was 700, however, the number has increased to 4,000 by the beginning of October 2017.
Israel arrested as many as 1,467 children in 2017 and 1,063 children in 2018 while 118 children were arrested during the first two months of 2019.
The total number of Palestinian children arrested between 2000 and 2018 has reached 16,000.
Meanwhile, Israel continues to detain 230 children.
The Israeli government has increased punishments against Palestinian children under the age of 14, lengthening prison terms issued against them with the Knesset’s help to 20 years.
The report also highlighted that the Israeli authorities have killed 83 Palestinian children since the end of 2017.

Kardashian, Jenner Family Thank ICE for Arresting Illegal Alien Who Broke into Their Home
Members of the Kardashian and Jenner family are thanking the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency for arresting an illegal alien who has twice broken into Kendall Jenner’s home.
“We are extremely appreciative of the hard work by the Los Angeles Police Department and ICE, whose swift response and professionalism led to this man’s apprehension. His actions have not only had a severe impact on Kendall’s life but the entire family’s sense of security, causing us to fear for Kendall’s safety as well as our own,” the family said in a statement to the press.
“Knowing this individual is in custody gives us peace of mind,” the joint message from the Kardashian and Jenner families concluded.
The statement came on the heels of the arrest of John Ford, 38, a Canadian who was convicted twice of breaking into 23-year-old model Kendall Jenner’s Los Angeles home.
ICE apprehended him in a hotel parking lot in Albuquerque, New Mexico, several days ago. Ford was apprehended twice before at Jenner’s home in the Mulholland Estates gated community of Los Angeles. In October of last year, he was caught sneaking around by Jenner’s pool.
Ford was convicted on charges of misdemeanor trespassing.
Jack P. Staton, special agent in charge of El Paso office of ICE’s Homeland Security Operations, said in a statement that Ford’s arrest may have “prevented a violent crime.”
“Our special agents acted quickly on this tip to ensure that this obsessive behavior didn’t escalate to become a tragedy,” Staton said.
“Following his arrest,” ICE reported, “Ford was processed and served with a notice to appear (NTA) before a federal immigration judge; he remains in ICE custody in El Paso, Texas, awaiting disposition of his immigration case.”
