HAZMAT response in Chandler following crash involving truck carrying phosphorous

CHANDLER, Ariz. (FOX 10) – Fire officials in Chandler say homes were evacuated, following a crash involving a truck that was carrying phosphorous.

According to a statement released by Chandler Police, the crash happened at Queen Creek Road and Arizona Avenue. The truck was heading north on Arizona Avenue and failed to stop for the red light at Queen Creek Road, and hit a car that was heading west on Queen Creek Road. The truck then stopped north of the intersection, and the driver of the truck fled on foot. That driver, identified by police as a 42-year-old man, was placed in custody by an officer, and is accused of hit and run, driving on a revoked license, and a red light violation. In addition, the driver was wanted on two unrelated warrants.

Chandler Fire officials were notified of the crash, after officers at the scene noticed the truck was smoking, and leaking some unknown substance. A HAZMAT situation was then declared, and firefighters found 60 gallons of phosphorus inside the truck. Six homes were evacuated as a result of the incident.
