My thoughts too. "Rich" was way to calm, trolling them, probably from a remote location using the planes radio as a repeater. Crashing on that island gave instant Fed jurisdiction. FBI, FAA, SS, NTSB, etc. Whoever they wanted and needed could go there and give orders.
