A mistake some Christians make is to interpret everything in a carnal manner. I.e. thinking that when God refers to His chosen people Israel, He is referring to the flesh and the literal DNA line of descent from Abraham.
God speaks in a spiritual manner. It is more useful to expand your thinking and understand that Israel refers not to the flesh but to spiritual descendants who followed the Commandments and continue to follow them, and who also follow Jesus Christ.
