Trump’s stance on the Golan will allow Israel to operate with impunity elsewhere

When President Donald Trump moved the US embassy to occupied Jerusalem last year, effectively sabotaging any hope of establishing a viable Palestinian state, he tore up the international rulebook.

Last week, he trampled all over its remaining tattered pages. He did so, of course, via Twitter.

Referring to a large piece of territory Israel seized from Syria in 1967, Trump wrote: “After 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability.”

Israel expelled 130,000 Syrians from the Golan Heights in 1967, under cover of the Six Day War, and then annexed the territory 14 years later – in violation of international law. A small population of Syrian Druze are the only survivors of that ethnic cleansing operation.

Replicating its illegal acts in the occupied Palestinian territories, Israel immediately moved Jewish settlers and businesses into the Golan.

Until now, no country had recognised Israel’s act of plunder. In 1981, UN member states, including the US, declared Israeli efforts to change the Golan’s status “null and void”.

But in recent months, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu began stepping up efforts to smash that long-standing consensus and win over the world’s only superpower to his side.

He was spurred into action when the Bashar Al Assad – aided by Russia – began to decisively reverse the territorial losses the Syrian government had suffered during the nation’s eight-year war.

The fighting dragged in a host of other actors. Israel itself used the Golan as a base from which to launch covert operations to help Assad’s opponents in southern Syria, including Islamic State fighters. Iran and the Lebanese militia Hezbollah, meanwhile, tried to limit Israel’s room for manoeuvre on the Syrian leader’s behalf.

Iran’s presence close by was how Netanyahu publicly justified the need for Israel to take permanent possession of the Golan, calling it a vital buffer against Iranian efforts to “use Syria as a platform to destroy Israel”.

Before that, when Assad was losing ground to his enemies, the Israeli leader made a different case. Then, he argued that Syria was breaking apart and its president would never be in a position to reclaim the Golan.

Netanyahu’s current rationalisation is no more persuasive than the earlier one. Russia and the United Nations are already well advanced on re-establishing a demilitarised zone on the Syrian side of the separation-of-forces line. That would ensure Iran could not deploy close to the Golan Heights.

At a meeting between Netanyahu and Trump in Washington on Monday night, the president converted his tweet into an executive decree.

Lebanese President Thanks Putin for Defending Christians in Middle East

President Michel Aoun on Tuesday held talks in Moscow with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during which he thanked him for “defending” the Christians of the Middle East.

“We thank you for your stances that defend the Christian minorities in the Levant and we hope you will continue this help,” Aoun told Putin during the Kremlin meeting.

“We met several economic figures and agreed with them on issues that might be vital for our future,” the president added.

Turning to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recognition of Syria’s occupied Golan Heights as part of Israel, Aoun said the U.S. move is “alarming for the neighboring countries.”

“The decision to annex the Golan contradicts with the U.N.’s international laws and we regret that such a decision has been taken,” the president added.

Putin for his part described Lebanon as a “traditional and old partner” for Moscow in the Middle East.

“We maintain our ties with your country’s leadership and with the representatives of all political forces,” he added.

Two Helicopter Pilots Killed in Crash Near Yuma, Arizona - US Marine Corps

The US Marine Corps said Sunday that two pilots died in a helicopter crash near Yuma, Arizona.

According to the Marine Corps Air Station, the crash occurred at about 8:45 p.m. (local time) Saturday. The pilots of the AH-1Z Viper were reportedly conducting a routine training mission.

The US military has launched the investigation into the incident. The names of those killed have not been released pending the notification of their families, according to the US Marine Corps.

The Bell AH-1Z is a twin-engine combat helicopter reportedly designed to meet the expeditionary requirements of the US Marine Corps. The AH-1Z can be equipped with two Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, 16 Hellfire air-to-ground missiles, and 76 rockets, among other ordnance.

The AH-1Z Viper is a relatively fast twin-engine attack helicopter based on the AH-1W SuperCobra developed for the United States Marine Corps as part of the H-1 upgrade program.

34 Percent of People at Trump’s Michigan Rally Were Democrats: Campaign Manager

Over a third of the crowd at President Donald Trump’s recent campaign-style rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, consisted of Democrats, according to 2020 campaign manager Brad Parscale.

Of the total 100,000 people who registered for the March 28 event, 14,000 filled the Van Andel Arena to the brink while nearly 20,000 were outside in the streets, Parscale said on Twitter.

In a new televised segment, Trump’s top campaign aide told Fox News that he’s harvesting “nearly a million voters’ data information in key swing states every month.” He said they were able to calculate data from the Michigan rally because they required all participants to register with their cell phone number, which they then linked to the voter file to “know exactly how they voted in the past.”

Hungary Govt Says Suspected ISIS Beheader Had Pre-Paid Debit Card from EU

The Hungarian government claims a suspected Islamic State terrorist who entered Europe posing as a refugee was in possession of a pre-paid debit card from the European Union, and that the EU has issued 64,000 such cards to migrants.

“A Syrian national by the name of F. Hassan was detained in Budapest by the officers of the Counter-terrorism Centre (TEK) on suspicion of acts of terror, including involvement in explosive attacks and carrying out multiple executions in his homeland in 2016,” reported Dr Zoltán Kovács, Hungary’s Secretary of State for International Communications international spokesman for the Cabinet Office of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

“TEK collaborated with Europol and the secret services of several countries to investigate the alleged criminal activities and European network of the Syrian man, who is thought to have been a high-ranking IS leader,” Kovács continued, describing how the asylum seeker had claimed he was working for the Greek security services after being discovered and brought to court.
