Supreme Court won't toss Planned Parenthood lawsuit against anti-abortion group that secretly taped them

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear the anti-abortion Center for Medical Progress' request to throw out a lawsuit from Planned Parenthood alleging that the group broke the law by secretly taping its employees discussing reimbursement for fetal tissue. The Center for Medical Progress argued that the Planned Parenthood lawsuits interfered with the organization's right to free speech and that it violated a law in California meant to protect citizen journalists. Because the Supreme Court will not take up the case, the ruling from the 9th Circuit permitting the lawsuit to proceed remains in place.

The case did not receive the support of at least four justices, which is the threshold all cases must meet in order to receive a hearing in the Supreme Court. The justices have appeared reluctant to take up controversial topics, including those linked to abortion, after the bruising confirmation battle Justice Brett Kavanaugh faced in the Senate. The Supreme Court has a more conservative makeup with the additions of Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, both appointees of President Trump, leading abortion rights advocates to raise concerns over future limits to abortion. The Center for Medical Progress is the organization that released secretly taped videos in 2015 that appeared to show Planned Parenthood staff discussing selling aborted fetal tissue for profit, a practice that is illegal.

The Center for Medical Progress misrepresented itself to Planned Parenthood as a tissue-procurement company in the videos and also accused Planned Parenthood of altering how it performs abortions in order to gather more intact specimens. In response, Planned Parenthood sued the Center for Medical Progress, accusing the organization of violation of the Racketeer Influence and Corrupt Organization Act, as well as fraud, invasion of privacy, and trespassing. Planned Parenthood has denied wrongdoing. A couple of Planned Parenthood clinics allow women to donate fetal tissue after an abortion for the purpose of medical research. Planned Parenthood used to accept funds to cover the cost of storing and transporting the tissue, but after the videos were released the organization announced it would swallow the costs.

Eric Swalwell loose lipped on 2020 plans: 'I'm announcing in two weeks'

California Rep. Eric Swalwell, one of the last holdouts in the already sprawling 2020 Democratic presidential field, has said he is a fortnightfrom announcing a bid. “Don’t tell anybody, but I’m announcing in two weeks,” Swalwell was overheard saying at a fundraiser on Friday, according to Politico. Swalwell held a dinner fundraiser at John’s Grill in San Francisco where about 80 big donors attended.

Earlier in the day, Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., held a lunch fundraiser at the same spot and hosted about 50 donors for a meet-and-greet. The presidential hopeful also took a selfie with one of the kitchen staff on the way out the door. Swalwell similarly snapped a photo with kitchen staff after his event. John’s Grill emerged as a campaign hot spot and is senator and presidential hopeful Kamala Harris’ home turf. Swalwell's House district lies across the San Francisco Bay, anchored in part by northern precincts of Silicon Valley.

If Swalwell does follow through and join the 2020 race, he will face a crowded field that features several governors and senators, current and former. He has been teasing a bid by appearing at events, like "Politics and Eggs” in New Hampshire, and visiting Iowa, the first caucus state. Swalwell, a former local prosecutor, was first elected to Congress in 2012. A member of the House Intelligence Committee, he's been a leading critic of President Trump's relations with Russia, and a virulent critic of the president on cable television.

Pew Research: U.S. Home to Nearly 20% of World’s Migrant Population

The United States is home to nearly 20 percent of the globe’s migrant population, a new study finds. The Pew Research Center reveals in a new study that the U.S. has admitted more foreign nationals than any other country in the world. Roughly 18 percent of the world’s migrant population lives in the U.S., the study found. About 44.5 million foreign-born residents now live in the U.S., far surpassing Germany’s 12.2 million foreign-born population and Russia’s nearly 12 million foreign-born population. In total, the U.S. is home to more foreign-born residents than Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and France combined. The 44.5 million foreign-born population living in the country marks a nearly 108-year record high of immigration to the U.S.

That 44.5 million includes roughly 22 million naturalized citizens, 11 million other residents — including more than 1.5 million foreign temporary visa-workers — plus about 11 million illegal aliens. The last time the U.S. foreign-born population was this high was in 1910 when immigrants made up 14.7 percent of the total country’s population.

Mass immigration has come at the expense of America’s working and middle class, which has suffered from poor job growth, stagnant wages, and increased public costs to offset the importation of millions of low-skilled foreign nationals. Four million young Americans enter the workforce every year, but their job opportunities are further diminished as the U.S. imports roughly two new foreign workers for every four American workers who enter the workforce. Even though researchers say 30 percent of the workforce could lose their jobs due to automation by 2030, the U.S. has not stopped importing more than a million foreign nationals every year. For blue-collar American workers, mass immigration has not only kept wages down but in many cases decreased wages, as Breitbart News reported. Meanwhile, the U.S. continues importing more foreign nationals with whom working-class Americans are forced to compete.
