I think you are dismissing this too easily.
The example you gave was an instant of nature affecting a small percentage of people not something like the examples I gave of human caused hazards that affect a large group and are not easily avoided or fixed because people in the interst of making money ignored warnings and chose science they wanted to listen to.
Also we have several filters against shit hitting us from space.
And I doubt comets are hitting us with snuff film and scat porn broadcasts.
