White House blasts clearance probe as 'dangerous,' 'shameful'

President Trump’s top spokesperson on Tuesday called House Democrats’ efforts to investigate the White House’s security clearance process “dangerous” and “shameful,” saying it could put millions of people’s personal data at risk.

“What the Democrats are doing is playing a very dangerous and a shameful game, frankly,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters. “They’re putting the 3 million people that do have a security clearance at risk. If you [pull] one individual, you’re putting all 3 million people’s personal information at risk.”

Sanders did not explain how the Democrats’ investigation would potentially jeopardize the broad swath of government employees and contractors’ data.

Democrats on the House Committee on Oversight and Reform are examining how top White House officials, such as the president's son-in-law and daughter, Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, were approved for clearances despite objections from career security officials.

New allegations from a White House whistleblower were made public on Monday, engulfing the Trump administration in a new round of controversy over whether clearances have become politicized.

The whistleblower told the committee the White House intervened to give high-level clearances to 25 people who had previously been denied them.

Sanders said the White House has “cooperated” with the Oversight panel throughout the process by giving them information on the general clearance process, but Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) has said the White House has blocked requests for information on clearances for specific individuals.

Clinton commemorates Equal Pay Day: 'A good day to call your senators'

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton commemorated Equal Pay Day on Twitter, saying it was it a "good day to call your senators."

"Today is #EqualPayDay, marking how far into 2019 women have to work to match men's earnings from 2018," she wrote. "It's a good day to call your senators and ask them to support the Paycheck Fairness Act."

On Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed the Paycheck Fairness Act, which seeks to address pay inequity between men and women. The bill passed along largely partisan lines, indicating that it is likely to face significant hurdles in a Republican-controlled Senate.

The Paycheck Fairness Act would prevent employers from asking about job applicants' salaries and prohibit retaliation against employees who compare their pay.

Clinton, who lost the 2016 presidential election to President Trump, has been outspoken on issues of gender equality. She made women's rights a large part of her 2016 campaign and was the first woman to receive the nomination of a major political party.
