Kerry pledges American support to Ukraine

Jul 7, 2016 11:36 AM EDT ← (This date is interesting)

KIEV, Ukraine — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday pledged sustained American support to Ukraine and offered assurances that the United States stands by the former Soviet republic in its territorial disputes with Russia and as it embarks on an ambitious program of reform.

Kerry met Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in Kiev to discuss progress on judicial, legislative, economic and anti-corruption efforts, and on agreements to end the conflict in eastern Ukraine with Russian-backed separatists. In 2014, Moscow annexed the Crimea Peninsula from Ukraine.

On Tuesday, Kerry visited neighboring Georgia, where he signed an agreement to boost U.S. military cooperation and sent a not-so-subtle message to Russia ahead of this week’s NATO summit in Poland.

U.S. officials say Ukraine has completed most of its obligations under the peace agreement — reached last year in Minsk, the capital of Belarus — that relate to providing the east with greater autonomy. But the officials complain that Russia and its proxies have not done their part on security matters, such as ensuring a cease-fire, withdrawing heavy weapons, providing full access to monitors and restoring Ukrainian control to border crossings.

“Ukraine is making a good faith effort to implement Minsk, there is no doubt in my mind about this,” Kerry told reporters at a news conference with Poroshenko. “It is committed to do more as the security conditions allow.”

Unless Russia follows through, he said, “Minsk is doomed to fail.”

Poroshenko stressed Ukraine’s demands for the security.

“There cannot be effective progress without comprehensive and sustainable security,” he said. “We insist on decisive implementation.”

Kerry & Biden are very much connected.

Inside the shady private equity firm run by Kerry and Biden’s kids

Joe Biden and John Kerry have been pillars of the Washington establishment for more than 30 years. Biden is one of the most popular politicians in our nation’s capital.

His demeanor, sense of humor, and even his friendly gaffes have allowed him to form close relationships with both Democrats and Republicans. His public image is built around his “Lunch Bucket Joe” persona. As he reminds the American people on regular occasions, he has little wealth to show for his career, despite having reached the vice presidency.

One of his closest political allies in Washington is former senator and former Secretary of State John Kerry. “Lunch Bucket Joe” he ain’t; Kerry is more patrician than earthy. But the two men became close while serving for several decades together in the US Senate. The two “often talked on matters of foreign policy,” says Jules Witcover in his Biden biography.

Kerry Arrives in Russia for Talks With Vladimir Putin on Cooperation.

May 12, 2015

SOCHI, Russia — Secretary of State John Kerry held more than four hours of talks on Tuesday with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, in what both sides depicted as a frank and cordial meeting aimed at reaching a common strategy to end the Syria war and defuse the Ukraine crisis.

Mr. Kerry and his Russian counterpart, Foreign Minister Sergey V. Lavrov — who met separately for more than four hours beforehand — described the entire day of discussions as the beginning of a fresh dialogue that might lead to broader cooperation on regional crises.

Talk of isolating Russia because of its intervention in Ukraine appeared to have been relegated to a past chapter of relations. Instead, the emphasis was finding new ways to collaborate, particularly on Syria. Mr. Kerry expressed hope on that front that American and Russian officials would deliberate “with increased focus and purpose.”

Despite the change in atmosphere, no concrete accomplishments were made public. Neither side announced initiatives to quell the fighting in Syria. Nor did they present a plan to stop the chlorine attacks that the United States and other Western nations believe the government of President Bashar al-Assad has carried out in recent months. But the tone of the meetings was different, largely devoid of the rancor and Cold War rhetoric that had increasingly framed relations between Russia and the United States over the past few years.

Still, it was far from clear that the American and Russia officials would reach agreement on the thorny issues on which Mr. Kerry now hopes to collaborate. On allegations of chemical weapons use, Mr. Kerry said the two sides would begin by exchanging information on the suspected attacks in Syria, while Mr. Lavrov stressed the importance of carrying out an international investigation.

Former FBI Director James Comey is warning that calls to probe the FBI and special counsel's Russia probe would lead to 'terrible cycle' of investigation.

Comey's own interactions with Trump before the president fired him were a subject of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation. Now, withe the completion of the Mueller report, Trump and Republican allies called for an investigation of the Mueller probe, the Clinton email investigation, and any FBI misconduct that occurred.

Trump himself on Tuesday renewed his call to look at the origins of the Russia probe – the 'beginnings and where it started, the whole situation.'

The president said some 'very bad people started something that should have never been started' and that they 'did things that were very, very bad for our country and very, very illegal – and you could even say treasonous.'

Comey was asked in an interview with CNN whether he was fearful of what may come amid calls by Trump and powerful officials such as Trump ally Judiciary Chairman Sen. Lindsey Graham.

'I don't fear it personally. I fear it as a citizen, right? Investigate what? Investigate that investigations were conducted? What would be the crime you'd be investigating?' Comey asked.

Then Comey was asked whether he and the FBI could have done more to 'lock her up' chants that were a staple of Trump's 2016 campaign. Audience members continue to erupt into the cheer at Trump's rallies.

'So it's a terrible cycle to start. He's already started it with calling for the locking up of his political opponents, including people like me and so it would just be more of that dangerous step and would I hope, though they'll continue to disappoint me, the Republicans would finally stand up and say we don't that kind of thing,' Comey added.

Then interviewer Christianne Amanpour brought up the 'lock her up' chants that erupted at Trump rallies during the 2016 campaign, and whether he or the FBI somehow could have done more to shut it down.

'That's not a role for government to play,' responded Comey. 'The beauty of this country is people can say what they want even if it's misleading and it's demagoguery.'

'The people should have shut it down were Republicans who understand the rule of law and the values that they claim to stand for. Shame on them, but it wasn't a role for government to play,' he said.
