needs a dig perhaps? Looks like a commie training facility
Democracy means more than simply political ideology. Highlander has been challenging and confronting social bias since its founding. In its first years, Highlander focused on organizing unemployed and working people, eventually becoming an unofficial education center for the Center for Industrial Organization (CIO – now part of the national AFL-CIO.) The Highlander founders challenged the status quo of the labor movement in the 1940s by refusing to work with unions that were not integrated. “Their feeling was that unless black and white people worked together in the South, the South could never change and unions could never be strong,” said Williams
oh snap. shoulda kept reading. 4 paragraphs later:
As an unfortunate result of its success in training activists, Highlander was targeted several times for government investigations. In 1961, the state of Tennessee charged Highlander with being an integrated institution (which was illegal at that time). There were also dubious charges of violating its charter by engaging in commercial activities, and of being a Communist training center. The original Highlander Center in Monteagle was closed and the grounds were confiscated and sold. “It was a place they could see that was helping to do something about the civil rights movement.” Williams noted. “And they didn’t like labor organizing because it changed the power relationships in the South. And because it was a [physical] place, they could close it down. So they finally figured out a reason.”

Highlander is constantly evolving and adapting to serve new movements as they emerge. Most recently, Highlander has been supporting and training organizing staff in juvenile justice, immigrant rights/migrant justice, and worker justice campaigns. In 2013, Highlander staff traveled to Florida and worked alongside the Florida-based New Jim Crow Movement to support a march in response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Highlander has also provided training in collaboration with Dream Defenders in Florida and North Carolina
