Instagram, Youtube and Facebook could face fines (and jail time) under new Australian laws
The legislation, developed in the wake of the Christchurch mosque shooting and passed in the Australian parliament on Thursday local time, targets social networks with hefty fines and even jail terms for company executives if they fail to take down "abhorrent violent material" shared on their platforms.
The laws are unique in that they target social networks and internet service providers, rather than the original users uploading violent material, and set out individual liability for material shared on an entire platform.
Imprisonment for executives
Under the laws social networks, internet service providers and "content service providers" are required to ensure the "expeditious removal" of violent material, and notify the Australian Federal Police "within a reasonable time" after becoming aware of its existence. Abhorrent violent material is defined as audio or visual material that includes footage or audio of torture, terrorist acts, murder, rape and kidnapping.
The penalties include up to three years jail time for individuals and fines of up to 10 percent of a company's annual turnover.
The laws are designed to stop the kinds of widespread sharing of violent videos and images, similar to what occurred during the Christchurch mosque shooting. During that terrorist attack, the suspected shooter live-streamed a 17-minute video of the violence on Facebook, which was shared millions of times on social networks.
Australian Attorney-General Christian Porter described the laws as "most likely a world first" in terms of legislating the conduct of social media networks.
"There was a near unanimous view among Australians that social media platforms had to take more responsibility for their content… and the law should prevent them from live streaming or playing acts of the most horrendous violence," he said.
The Attorney-General also called out specific platforms including 4Chan, Facebook and YouTube, saying specific individuals at social media companies could be targeted under the laws.
"If you look at an organisation like 4Chan, which is a hosting service, that was created, owned and operated by an individual," he said. "With respect to the larger platforms like Facebook, YouTube, there could be instances where an individual is so complicit with the reckless availability of violent material that they would be individually liable."
Law 'does nothing to address hate speech'
The laws have been slammed by companies including Facebook, Google and Twitter.
In a statement, the Digital Industry Group Inc (which includes the above companies as well as Amazon and Verizon Media) said the legislation was rushed and "does nothing to address hate speech."
"For its part, Facebook previously said that the live-stream of the shooting had than 200 viewers during the live broadcast and that the video got roughly 4,000 views before it was taken down. The company then removed 1.5 million copies of the video within the first 24 hours, 1.2 million of which were removed at the point of upload."

Air Force on The New AC-130 Gunship: ‘That's The Sound America Makes When She's Angry’
The AC-130J Ghostrider ground-attack aircraft has picked up several different unofficial moinikers in the five years the Air Force Special Operations Command maniacs at Hurlburt Field have spent slapping guns on the thing: “The most advanced gunship in the inventory." “The ultimate battle plane.” “A bomb truck with guns on it.”
The latest affectionate description of the converted MC-130J Combat Shadow II is probably the best — and it reflects the branch’s excitement to get this bad boy in the air.
“That's the sound America makes when she's angry,” 1st Special Operations Wing commander Col. Tom Palenske told Military.com air reporter Oriana Pawlyk of the Ghostrider’s arsenal as the aircraft brrrrrrrp’d off its 25mm, 40mm, and 105mm cannons in the skies above Hurlburt during Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson’s visit this week. "It's going to be awesome. It's our big gun truck.”
He’s not wrong: the Ghostrider’s weapons system is, to even the most cursory observer, awe-inspiring. Apart from the 25mm Gatling gun and 40mm cannon Pawlyk observed in action and its payload of various munitions — namely AGM-114 Hellfire missiles and the GPS-guided Small Diameter Bombs favored by the Pentagon after years of uptempo bombing sorties in the Middle East — the Ghostrider will boast a 30mm cannon that Palenske described as "almost like a sniper rifle … it's that precise, it can pretty much hit first shot, first kill.”
That’s before you even get to the 105mm cannon that AFSOC slapped on the back of the airframe at the insistence of former AFSOC chief Lt. Gen. Bradley Heithold. The cannon is literally the equivalent of an inverted howitzer. And while AFSOC always intended for the Ghostrider to operate with the latest electronic warfare package (and increasing priority in recent months alone), the command has also pushed, despite funding obstacles in Congress, to outfit the airframe with a high-powered directed energy weapon that could disable enemy vehicles, communications, and power sources.
Ironically, AFSOC’s new angel of death may be too overgunned for its own good, if you can imagine such a thing. A recent evaluation from DoD’s Office of the Director of Operational Test and Evaluation found the aircraft’s fire control systems “performed inconsistently when accounting for changing ballistic conditions,” like strong crosswinds and sudden changes in altitude (inconsistencies that would necessitate on-the-fly recalibrations). But the report also found that the recoil 30mm GAU-23/A cannon’s fastest rate of fire causes the gun to shake so aggressively that automatic safeguards kick in, requiring the gun and mount to recenter before going to town again. The sniper rifle, it seems, is too powerful for the airframe.
Palenske insisted to Military.com that the report “drastically exaggerated” the problem. He also said that it’s already been fixed. “All of the gun actuating systems are electric as opposed to hydraulic. Hydraulic's sloppy," Palenske told Pawlyk of the Ghostrider’s new gun mounts. "And remember, we're just bringing this thing online. You can't expect to slap this thing together … and have that thing come out perfect.”
A big, expensive gun that’s the close air support version of a bucking bronco? There’s nothing more American than that.

Tourists Forced To Escape Tsunami Wave When Massive Iceland Glacier Collapses (Video)
A wonderful natural spectacle was caught on camera this Sunday when a massive glacier collapsed in an Iceland lagoon, leaving the startled tourists to run frantically as a major tsunami wave was formed.
Captured in on the edge of the Jökulsárlón lagoon, part of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier can be seen falling into the water creating a series of waves that come towards tourists on the shore.
As the visitors flee in shock the lagoon is subsequently riddled with huge, rolling waves that approach the rocks on the shore which sent watching tourists scurrying away from the incoming water.
The filmer said: “This area is only accessible with mountain guides and everybody shown in the video had been previously instructed to immediately leave the beach if a calving occurs.
“Due to the sheer size and proximity it was a bit of a close call but everybody was safe and stayed dry.”

Leftist policies are reaching new levels of insanity in Massachusetts, as Suffolk County DA Rachael Rollins pushes her highly contested “no-prosecute” list into action. The “list” gives a green light to a number of arrest-worthy offenses — including trespassing, shoplifting, disorderly conduct, and “wanton or malicious destruction of property.” In other words, local law enforcement is being directed by the district attorney to stand idly by while miscreants steal and destroy property. The directive from Rollins also orders police to refuse to cooperate with ICE in the arresting of illegal immigrants at the courthouse — no matter the severity of their crimes. What could go wrong?
It is no surprise this new “policy,” also known as the “Rollins Memo” has been met with substantial scrutiny. While Rollins may say her memo is about creating an “equal” justice system, the victims of these now-permissible crimes aren’t likely to feel they are being treated equally. But of course, that’s really the goal here, isn’t it? No one cares about the shopkeepers and homeowners that are victimized. Under far-left dogma, criminals are the true victims, we’re just too “hateful” to see it. This is doublethink at its finest.

Facebook Data of Millions Exposed in Leaky Datasets
Researchers say that two publicly exposed dataset are leaking Facebook data- from user names to plaintext passwords.

Hundreds of millions of Facebook records – including account names, personal data, and more – have been found in two separate publicly-exposed app datasets.
The first publicly-exposed dataset originates from a Mexico-based media company, Cultura Colectiva, and contains over 540 million records including comments, likes, reactions, account names and more. The second publicly-exposed backup, a Facebook-integrated app titled At the Pool, exposed plaintext app passwords for 22,000 users and other data. Both exposed databases have been secured, researchers said.
“Facebook’s policies prohibit storing Facebook information in a public database,” a Facebook spokesperson told Threatpost. “Once alerted to the issue, we worked with Amazon to take down the databases. We are committed to working with the developers on our platform to protect people’s data.”
The Facebook spokesperson told Threatpost that the incident is currently under investigation, and at this point is it unclear how long the records were up and whether the data was misused.
The scope of publicly-exposed datasets are similar to that of an incident with Facebook and Cambridge Analytica, which took place March 2018. However in that case, data was harvested by app developers, as opposed to being accidentally exposed.
Both exposed datasets were from app developers on Facebook who collected data from people who used their apps through the platform.
“These two situations speak to the inherent problem of mass information collection: the data doesn’t naturally go away, and a derelict storage location may or may not be given the attention it requires,” Upguard researchers who discovered the exposed datasets said in a Wednesday post.
Cultura Colectiva, a media company based in Mexico, collected data on responses to their Facebook posts, enabling them to tune an algorithm for predicting which future content will generate the most traffic. The Cultura Colectiva contains 146 gigabytes of data detailing comments, likes, reactions, account names, FB IDs and more.
At the Pool, meanwhile, which launched in 2011, is an app that was integrated into Facebook’s platform that served as a way of introducing users to potential new friends.

Climate change 'will push European cities towards breaking point'
Major British towns and cities, including Glasgow, Wrexham, Aberdeen and Chester, could be much more severely affected by climate change than previously thought, according to new research.
The study, by Newcastle University, analysed changes in flooding, droughts and heatwaves for every European city using all climate models.
Looking at the impact by the year 2050-2100, the team produced results for three possible outcomes – low, medium and high-impact scenarios.
But even the most optimistic case showed 85% of UK cities with a river, including London, would face increased flooding.
In the high-impact scenario, some cities and towns in the UK and Ireland could see the amount of water per flood as much as double. The worst affected is Cork, which could see 115% more water per flooding, while Wrexham, Carlisle, Glasgow, and Chester could all see increases of more than 75%.
The increase in severity in the predicted impact has come after the team, in a first of its kind, examined all three climate hazards together in the largest study of its kind ever undertaken.
After around three years of analysing the information across hundreds of cities in Europe, they found every outcome was worse than previously thought.
Wrexham, Carlisle, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Derry and Chester were the worst-hit UK towns and cities for river flooding, with Dublin, Cork and Waterford the worst in Ireland.
All 571 cities studied saw a worsening in heatwaves and the high-impact scenario predicted southern Europe experiencing droughts 14 times worse than today.

Report: Nearly Half Of California Sheriff Departments Are Resisting The State’s Sanctuary Cities Law
According to a new study from the Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Asian Law Caucus and the University of Oxford Centre for Criminology-Border Criminologies, California's implementation of its "California Values Act" sanctuary cities law is not going particularly well. In fact, sheriffs in roughly half the state's jurisdictions are actively resisting enforcement of the measure.

Nearly half of California sheriff departments are protesting a new California law that bars them from helping federal immigration officials find criminal illegal immigrants, according to a new report.
What’s more, several of the 169 law enforcement agencies in California are challenging former Gov. Jerry Brown’s bid to hide criminal illegals by letting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials to seize the wanted prisoners for deportation and not telling the state. …
The report from the University of Oxford Centre for Criminology-Border Criminologies reveals what many law enforcement agencies are doing to get around the law. The report is critical of those moves and calls on the state to crack down on agencies that help ICE to find and remove criminal illegals.
Specifically, according to Bedard, 68 out of 169 sheriff departments considered by the study — about 40% — were not in compliance.
Nonetheless, despite nearly half of all sheriff departments not fully complying, the Oxford study still reports that, "In its first five months from January 2018 to May 2018, [California Values Act] implementation led to a 41% decrease in ICE arrests at local jails compared to the immediately preceding five months from August 2017 to December 2017."
The study's conclusion took direct aim at the resisting California sheriffs:
The California Values Act is one of the most expansive sanctuary laws in the country. As a result of implementation of this new law, there has been a notable drop in [law enforcement agency (LEA)]-assisted [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] and [Customs and Border Protection] arrests in the state, especially when compared to anti-sanctuary states such as Texas. However, there is much work to be done by the State to bring LEAs into full compliance with SB 54 and to ensure that the law is not undermined through the exploitation of its policy exceptions. At a time when the federal administration has been hostile to immigrant communities and has ramped up immigration arrests, detentions, and deportations, it is imperative that Californians are confident that their local, county, and state government will not work to deport them, their family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors.
Nonetheless, Dan Cadman of the conservative Center Immigration Studies had a different take:
The practical effects of the [California Values Act] have been disastrous. Many individuals have been needlessly injured or murdered by aliens released to the street by misguided enforcement organizations in the state. Some of the circumstances involved have been brutal and horrific.
Sadly, a number of those slain by illegal aliens released to the streets have been police officers and sheriff's deputies (see, e.g., here, and here). Some other lucky few officers have escaped with their lives. One of the illegal aliens (with a long history of prior drug convictions), who was later arrested and tried for the murders, profanely declared he didn't "f-ing regret it" and went on to threaten the jurors. …
Bravo! I hope [resisting LEAs] keep on doing it, and that more join them. What's that motto on the side of many police cars? Oh, that's right, it's "To Serve and Protect". What better way to do that than to see alien criminals removed from American communities, instead of releasing them to offend again.

The do not permit extrapolating into the future (forecasting). Many branches of science know this but not in climate science. It is a field of low standards and a generator of ridiculous, unsupportable, conclusions. IMO.
