Frederick Herman Korth (September 9, 1909 – September 14, 1998) served as the 56th U.S. Secretary of the Navy during 1962-63; he was also an Assistant Secretary of the Army in 1952-53.

Appointed as Navy Secretary by President John F. Kennedy on January 4, 1962, Korth resigned October 14, 1963 effective November 1, 1963.

He was president of the Continental National Bank of Fort Worth, Texas. Continental National Bank was one of a number of banks which participated in a line of credit for the TFX (Tactical Fighter Experimental), which later emerged as the more well-known F-111 Aardvark. When asked about this alleged conflict of interest at a press conference, President Kennedy responded, "…I have no evidence that Mr. Korth acted in any way improperly in the TFX matter….I have no evidence that Mr. Korth benefited improperly during his term of office in the Navy, and I have no evidence, and you have not, as I understand the press has not produced any, nor the McClellan Committee, which would indicate that in any way he acted improperly in the TFX. I have always believed that innuendoes should be justified before they are made, either by me and the Congress, or even in the press."

When he was not serving in the above public or private sector capacities, Fred Korth was a lawyer in private practice. One of his better known cases was a small one heard June 24, 1948 in the County of Tarrant, Texas, when his client, Edwin A. Ekdahl, was officially divorced from Marguerite Frances Claverie Ekdahl (also known as Marguerite Oswald, the mother of Lee Harvey Oswald).

Following the end of his first marriage in 1964, he began a romantic relationship with heiress and socialite Marjorie Merriweather Post, daughter of breakfast-cereal magnate C. W. Post, twenty years his senior. He was a co-executor of Post's will. Her estate includes her mansion on Palm Beach Island, Mar-a-Lago, purchased in 1980 by Donald Trump.

His stepdaughter, Melissa Williams O'Rourke, is the mother of former U.S. Representative Beto O'Rourke.

Lawyers for Clare Bronfman are asking a judge to grant the Seagram’s heiress a separate trial from cult leader and accused kiddie porn producer Keith Raniere — saying that while prosecutors allege Bronfman and Raniere had sex with each other, they can’t prove she committed any sex crimes.

Allegations of the affair were revealed in a new motion filed by Bronfman’s attorneys asking Brooklyn federal Judge Nicholas Garaufis to dismiss the newest indictment against her and to grant the 39-year-old her own trial.

In the fresh indictment, prosecutors accused the Nxivm head Raniere of manufacturing child porn while engaging in an unspecified sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl. Bronfman is charged with identity theft and also racketeering conspiracy, which includes an allegation that she knew of Raniere’s relationship with the child.

“Try as it might, the government remains unable to explain why it would be allowed to introduce evidence of sex crimes at Bronfman’s separate trial. It argues that Bronfman had sex with Raniere and told another woman (whose visa she allegedly helped obtain by fraud) not to have sex with her husband,” the defense writes, referencing Raniere, though the two are not married.

“But even if this is true, having sex and talking about sex does not suggest that Bronfman knew about sex crimes or that those sex crimes have any bearing on the government’s case against Bronfman,” the filing reads.

Her attorneys add in the filing that Bronfman had absolutely no knowledge of Raniere’s alleged sexual relationship with underage victims, and “undisputedly” had no knowledge of DOS, the secret society within Nxivm accused of branding women who were being used as sex slaves for Raniere.

Bronfman appeared Thursday alongside Raniere and “Smallville” actress Allison Mack in court, where she appeared in good spirits.

It was a far cry from last Wednesday, when the beverage heiress fainted in court following a question from the judge about whether she’d lied about hiring embattled attorney Michael Avenatti to represent her. She clarified during a hearing the following day that she’d briefly retained Avenatti, but then fired him.

Outside the courtroom Thursday, Bronfman smiled when her attorney Mark Geragos let slip that Monday will be her 40th birthday.

“Thank you,” she mumbled when offered early felicitations.

Geragos declined to comment when asked if his client shared a sexual relationship with Raniere.

Garaufis has yet to rule on Bronfman’s motion for a separate trial. Openings are scheduled for April 29.

Ex-ministers keep up pressure on Canada's Trudeau over scandal

Two former ministers who were expelled from Canada’s ruling Liberal Party this week kept up pressure on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday, saying he should have apologized for inappropriately trying to influence a criminal proceeding.

The two-month old scandal centers on Jody Wilson-Raybould, who in February said officials had leaned on her while she was justice minister last year to ensure construction company SNC-Lavalin Group Inc escaped a corruption trial.

Former Treasury Board chief Jane Philpott resigned her post because she disagreed with how Trudeau had handled the matter. He turfed both women from the Liberal caucus on Tuesday in a bid to end a scandal which is undermining his support ahead of a federal election in October.

“There is very good evidence that there were attempts to have political interference with a very serious criminal trial,” Philpott said in an interview with Canadian Broadcasting Corp.

“I have tried to suggest that the way to deal with this is to speak the truth, to admit that mistakes were made, to apologize to Canadians for it and find out how it happened and make sure it never happens again,” Philpott said in one of her first interviews since being ejected from caucus.
