Touches on the mystery of the flow and direction of time and what time might be. I developed a possible derivation from his theory for those still reading and interested, feel free to poke holes, the idea only recently came to me but I like it, it is mind bending: our experience of time is the movement of an alleged fourth spatial dimension through our 3 dimensional world. The same way moving a 3 dimensional sphere through 2D man's world (think of a plane like a sheet of paper). Something pops into his existence, a circle, as if by magic, the circle grows, shrinks then finally disappears into thin air. One slice at a time of our 3D world is all 2D man can see bc he cannot perceive our 3rd dimension of existence. Isnt it possible that a fourth dimension of reality exists in a perpendicular direction that we cannot perceive? and the movement of something from that 4th dimension through our 3 dimension space would create the perception by us of movement and movement in physics is the foundation of time. The implications are enormous and fascinating.

To clarify the 2D->3D, 3D->4D analogy: a 3 dimensional object can exist in a 2D plane as an interference in their plane and it will only be perceived one slice at a time. Likewise a 4 dimensional object is reduced to a 3 dimensional object when it interferes with a 3 dimensional space. A 4 dimensional object is reduced to a 3D shadow of its true essence. This has all been derived mathematically because we cannot perceive the alleged 4th dimension.
All of that is to say it could be mathematically possible that we are 4 dimensional beings moving through and experiencing a three dimensional space and the passage of time that we perceive is this movement. Imagine a fixed three dimensional space. Now imagine our (alleged) four dimensional world passing through 3D space. That passing through movement becomes slices of our 4D selves like a 3D movie here. Precisely the same way passing a 3D object through a 2D plane becomes a slice at a time, like still image slices of an event that create a movie.

I love sci-fi. Just love it. I think it's the other worldly mind bending it gives us. I remember seeing the Statue of Liberty buried to her eyes at the end of 'planet of the apes' I was 8 and it just shocked my soul. The deep time and the enormous power of nuclear destruction just knocked a brick out of me.
I say all that to say I know we cannot understand so many strange things about our existence. But as a Christian I admit I fear my desire to learn might tempt me to 'inquire' into areas that are dangerous without realizing I've crossed a plane, call it a spiritual plane whatever that is, that we shouldn't be in. A place that can hurt us somehow. Makes it hard because I enjoy thinking about extra dimensional space but I DO NOT ever want to entertain something an entity for instance, that could be dangerous.
I say all of this knowing as a believer I know my position or standing aka my salvation is secure forever. Nothing I do can mess it up. Thanks for the bump. Hopefully Dr Humphreys fascinates you as much as it does me. Nobody has done gravity as much mathematical service as he has. He accurately calculates of the density of the aether (aka spacetime, flux, the fabric of space, the continuum, plenum these are all names for the same thing) the velocity of the proposed fourth dimension, the arther's mass per cubic centimeter (which by the way is unimaginably massive).
Past cosmologists and physicists have struggled with these because they never match each other. For example physicists invented dark matter to explain the tight orbits of galaxies bc they don't have enough visible mass for the stars to move so fast without being slung out of orbit. Humphreys' solution solves the problem without dark matter. In his solution the spacetime fabric or aether is so massive it fits the missing mass astronomers needed to within the margin of error. Turns out to be a perfect solution.
Here's the REAL kicker - according to Einstein our universe, the fabric, acts as though it's accelerating in an unknown fourth dimension. That acceleration is what gives planets their gravity. The trampoline is how everyone explains it. Place a bowling ball on a trampoline, now quickly lift the trampoline up into the air. The bowling ball dents the fabric but that's only a two dimensional analogy of gravity in 3 dimensional space. The problem becomes keeping the fabric dented. It's not plausible to keep accelerating the trampoline, at some point you have to stop and the ball rises off the trampoline. Einstein faced the same problem because if you accelerate continuously eventually you reach the sound barrier then the speed of light then after a few thousand years we'd be traveling many times the speed of light just to maintain the 9.8m/s2 required to maintain gravity. Humphreys theory postulates that instead of our universe traveling through hyperspace in a straight line what if our space is rotating? That is the genius of his theory. He asks what if our space is wrapped around on itself, rotating on an axis? Picture a bicycle wheel and our 3D space especially the fabric is the tire and we and every planet and star is contained in that fabric. Now if its spinning it puts a constant centeipital/centrifugal force on the fabric and gives everything with mass it's gravitational weight to dent the fabric.
The numbers line up, it solves the missing matter problem, solves the acceleration problem and as a bonus it could explain what time is & why it moves in one direction and provides some nice future potential to solving folded space, Einstein Rosen bridges, black holes, where quantum particles come from and go to as well as time travel and white holes.
