Whoever their pick is, they're stacking the deck now to make sure an unknown candidate can secure the nomination.

 

Running 16 candidates in the primary is fragmenting the vote enough such that the chosen one can stand out.

 

Same thing happened in 2016. HRC wanted to run against Trump. She thought she would win one way or another since he was not a connected/corrupt politician. They wanted him to skate through, so they fragmented the vote to keep Jeb, Cruz, etc. out.
