Because the masters, whoever they have been at various times, always know or quickly discover that controlling the narrative is the key to ruling. As rulers, their lives are on the line, & thus they play by the dictum that anything goes.

So they fake events to further their narrative, while spin, spin, spinning past events that either were or were not real. All of which keeps them in power by twisting people's perceptions, which in turn determines which timeline shall be.

An underrated aspect of this is the repeat con, which is the continual media revisiting of faked events with a view to reinforcing the propaganda in the minds of the viewers.
