Nigerian Child Brides As Young As 10 Years Old Sold To Old Men Via Facebook

Child brides from Nigeria are being advertised and sold on Facebook, according to a report published Thursday by The Daily Beast. Girls as young as 10 years old, known culturally as “money women” or “money wives,” are sold to much older men in exchange for money or traded goods. While the tradition of child brides far predates the era of social media, some argue that Facebook has made the marketing of these young women very easy and widespread.

The Daily Beast examined this practice and its prevalence in the Becheve community of Nigeria, where the number of brides a man has reflects his wealth and status. “The practice is meant to boost the status of the men in Becheve community,” Magnus Ejikang, a chief in Ogbakoko, told The Daily Beast. “The more brides you have, the more respect you gain in the community.” The article emphasizes the fact that this practice, and Facebook’s role in it, is not limited to just Nigeria, but spans across Africa, with one recent case involving a young girl from South Sudan. The girl’s father allegedly discussed the sale of his daughter with five separate bidders, some of which were reportedly senior officials in the South Sudanese government. The girl was reportedly sold by her father to one of the Facebook bidders for 530 cows, three Land Cruiser V8 cars and $10,000. Facebook did take action to remove the post advertising the girl, but by that time, the girl had already been sold and made the 10th wife of Kok Alat, a wealthy South Sudanese businessman.

A representative from Facebook reportedly told the Daily Mail in a statement that, “any form of human trafficking — whether posts, pages, ads or groups — is not allowed on Facebook and we remove this content whenever we identify it.” “We’re always improving the methods we use to identify content that breaks our policies, including doubling our safety and security team to more than 30,000 and investing in technology,” the representative continued.

Queen Eteng, a researcher at Nigerian women’s rights group “Our Women Network,” says that the fathers of trafficked girls find out how to use Facebook through their sons who are more savvy on social media than they are. “The majority of Becheve men knew nothing about Facebook until their sons and other young relatives began to show them photos of young Becheve girls on the platform,” Eteng said. “Most fathers don’t run the Facebook pages opened in their names,” she continued. “Rather it is younger family members who create the pages and post the photos.”

Glenn Greenwald Called Out NYT’s Piece Criticizing Barr

The Intercept’s Glenn Greenwald, in a Friday interview with Tucker Carlson, criticized the New York Times’ Wednesday report alleging that Attorney General William Barr is mishandling Robert Mueller’s report on Russian collusion. The Times’ story, which relied on anonymous, secondhand sources, claimed that members of Mueller’s team believe that the report is more damaging to President Donald Trump than Barr indicated in his summary of its principal conclusions, which was delivered to Congress last month.

Greenwald began, “Well, it’s similar to the journalism that has fueled the three-year hoax that has drowned U.S. discourse: namely, that the New York Times, The Washington Post gives anonymity to totally unknown people to make claims that are completely bereft of any specifics unaccompanied by any evidence whatsoever.” “So that it’s impossible to analyze and then journalists see it and start celebrating online on social media and cable news as though it’s some sort of a smoking gun,” he continued. “I don’t really have personally any problem with having the Mueller report published, since I don’t think that in this case, a special counsel is just acting as a prosecutor. They are also there to say what actually happened. I think we would all benefit from that so that we no longer have to have CIA leaks trying to manipulate our brain.”

Greenwald went on to point out that the anonymous people who are allegedly unhappy feel that way based on Barr’s characterization that Trump did not obstruct justice. He continued, “It’s amazing that actually the part about the no collusion got bolstered because even these malcontents who are complaining to the New York Times anonymously are saying, ‘We don’t have the problem with the section finally finding no collusion.'” The Washington Post followed up on the NYT’s report that quoted sources but they still did not talk to members of the Mueller team.

The Department of Justice pushed back on their reporting. “Every page of the ‘confidential report’ provided to Attorney General Barr on March 22, 2019, was marked ‘May Contain Material Protected Under Fed. R. Crim. P. 6(e)’ — a law that protects confidential grand jury information — and therefore could not be publicly released,” Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec previously said in a statement to The Daily Caller.

‘Pharma Bro’ Shkreli Reportedly In Solitary Confinement After Running Company From Prison With Contraband Phone

“Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli is reportedly serving his prison sentence in solitary confinement after running his drug company through a contraband cellphone. Shkreli is about one year and seven months into a seven-year sentence after being convicted on two counts of securities fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud. While locked up in the Federal Correctional Institution in New Jersey, Shkreli has stayed involved with his company Phoenixus AG by phone, even firing the company’s interim CEO from his cell, reported Forbes.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Shkreli’s contraband phone, which violated prison rules, March 7. Sometime during March, prison authorities placed Shkreli in solitary confinement because of his continued involvement with Phoenixus AG, formerly known as Turing Pharmaceuticals AG, two sources told Forbes. A fellow inmate of Shkreli’s, Justin Liverman, told Forbes the disgraced former pharmaceutical CEO was still in solitary Sunday.

Shkreli also used his illegal cellphone to post to Twitter through another account after his original was suspended for violating the social media platform’s rules on abusive behavior, TheWSJ reported. GOP Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas introduced a bill Monday to allow prisons to jam cell phone signals, citing Shkreli’s behavior as an example of why the law is needed. In other cases, contraband cell phones have been used by criminals to order assassinations on police officers and prison guards. The use of such contraband is pervasive throughout the prison system as inmates work with allies on the outside to bypass prison security and connect with the outside world.

Incriminating Phone Calls: Doctors Admit to Live Harvesting of Falun Gong Adherents’ Organs in China

When investigators in Canada began looking into allegations of forced organ harvesting on a mass scale in China, one of the ways they gathered information was making phone calls to the hospitals involved posing as patients needing an organ. It was back in 2006 that former secretary of state David Kilgour and human rights lawyer David Matas uncovered evidence that Falun Gong prisoners of conscience were being killed on demand to supply China’s organ transplant industry. Their subsequent report, titled “Bloody Harvest: The Killing of Falun Gong for Their Organs,” concluded that imprisoned Falun Gong practitioners were indeed being used to service a lucrative and burgeoning transplant industry. One of the many methods the researchers used in their investigation was to call the hospitals in China where organ harvesting takes place and speak to medical professionals, assuming the identity of a transplant patient or the relative of someone in need of an organ. In many cases, those they spoke to admitted that they were sourcing organs for transplant from Falun Gong practitioners.
