Yesterday at a hearing for a bill (HB 5817) that would make sex between school employees and students a crime—even after they’ve turned 16, the legal age of consent in Rhode Island—both teachers’ unions made their objections known. NEA RI didn’t have anyone testify but Pat Crowley did sign in to the hearing and note his opposition to the bill. I suspect the NEA also submitted written testimony. James Parisi of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) did testify—in fact, we sat beside one another, each offering our very different opinions on the bill.

BREAKING: Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals Upholds Kentucky Law Requiring Doctors To Play Sound Of Baby's Heartbeat Before Abortion
In a tremendous victory for the pro-life movement and unborn children, on Thursday judges in the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a Kentucky law that requires doctors to play the sound of the fetal heartbeat and show and describe the ultrasound of the unborn child for the prospective mother before she undergoes an abortion. The Court ruled that Kentucky’s “Ultrasound Informed Consent Act” doesn’t violate the Constitution by compelling doctors to play the sound of the heartbeat and the ultrasound before their patients.
The ruling came in a split decision; Judge John Bush, writing for the majority, stated of the bill, H.B. 2:
H.B. 2 provides relevant information. The information conveyed by an ultrasound image, its description, and the audible beating fetal heart gives a patient greater knowledge of the unborn life inside her. This also inherently provides the patient with more knowledge about the effect of an abortion procedure: it shows her what, or whom, she is consenting to terminate. That this information might persuade a woman to change her mind does not render it suspect under the First Amendment. It just means that it is pertinent to her decision-making.
The bill had been challenged by EMW Women’s Surgical Center, P.S.C. and its associated physicians under the First Amendment; EMW won its suit against the defendants, Kentucky Attorney General Andrew G Beshear and Kentucky Secretary of the Cabinet of Health and Family Services Adam Meier, in the district court, which, as Bush wrote, “applied heightened scrutiny to invalidate the statute and permanently enjoin enforcement of H.B. 2.” Bush continued, “Our court then denied the motion of then-Defendant-Appellant Vickie Glisson, who was Secretary of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, to stay the injunction pending appeal.”
Bush explained, “In NIFLA the Court clarified that no heightened First Amendment scrutiny should apply to informed-consent statutes like the abortion-informed-consent statute at issue in Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey. … Thus, even though an abortion-informed-consent law compels a doctor’s disclosure of certain information, it should be upheld so long as the disclosure is truthful, non-misleading, and relevant to an abortion. … Because H.B. 2, like the statute in Casey, requires the disclosure of truthful, non- misleading, and relevant information about an abortion, we hold that it does not violate a doctor’s right to free speech under the First Amendment. We also hold that the Attorney General, Defendant-Appellant Andrew Beshear, is not a proper party to this case. “
Bush noted, “There is no requirement that the patient view the images or listen to the doctor’s description. The doctor also must auscultate the fetal heartbeat but may turn off the volume of the auscultation if the patient so requests. … But H.B. 2 does not penalize a doctor if the patient requested that the heartbeat sound be turned off or chose not to look at the ultrasound images.”

BREAKING: Syrian Caught Trying to Illegally Enter US Through Mexico
According to new reports, Customs and Border Protection agents arrested a 46-year-old Syrian national who allegedly attempted to illegally enter the US by hiding underneath a train in Mexico.
The man was apprehended after CBP agents “noticed an anomaly” on the train using image screening technology.
“This apprehension highlights the fact that none of our inspections are routine, especially when people purposely attempt to avoid the process,” said a CBP spokesperson

A 46-year-old Syrian man has been detained for attempting to enter the United States from Mexico illegally by hiding in a train, border protection agents say.
Customs and Border Protection officials report agents apprehended the man last weekend, after a train from Mexico passed through an imaging system at the downtown Calexico port screening center in southern California. “CPB officers noticed an anomaly on the lower side of the commercial railcar,” leading to the compartment on the outside of the train where the man was hiding.
The man was taken to a secure location, where officials confirmed, partly through fingerprinting, that he is a Syrian national without documentation authorizing his entry into the United States.
“This apprehension highlights the fact that none of our inspections are routine, especially when people purposely attempt to avoid the process,” port director David Salazar said in a statement Wednesday. “CBP puts a lot of effort in identifying, vetting and prosecuting people who just don’t want to abide by the legal process of entering our country.”
The Syrian national was sent to Imperial County jail and charged with attempting to enter the country illegally. He is set to remain in jail while he awaits trial.

Texas House Speaker declares 'constitutional carry' gun bill dead after gun-rights activist shows up at his home

A Texas gun rights activist drove to the homes of Republican legislators he blamed for stalling proposals to expand gun laws, prompting state troopers to monitor Bonnen's, the now House speaker, family residence.
Texas House Speaker Dennis Bonnen declared Friday that a “constitutional carry” gun bill was dead after a gun rights activist showed up at his Houston-area home to advocate for it.
Chris McNutt, executive director of Texas Gun Rights and a supporter of the legislation that would allow Texans to carry firearms with a license, showed up to Bonnen’s home in Lake Jackson on Wednesday to question why the bill had stalled, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Bonnen, a Republican, was in the state capital of Austin but his wife teenage sons were inside the home. He said McNutt's actions were a demonstration of "insanity" and called him an "overzealous advocate for criminals to get a gun."
"If you want to talk about issues and you want to advocate, you do it in this building. You don’t do it at our residences," Bonnen said. "Threats and intimidation will never advance your issue. Their issue is dead."
The bill, sponsored by Republican state Rep. Jonathan Stickland, remained pending in the House Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee for four months into the legislative session, according to the paper.
McNutt also visited the homes of GOP state representatives Dustin Burrows and Four Price. Bonnen said his home had been placed under surveillance by the state Department of Public Safety following the incident.
The paper reported that McNutt posted rants on Facebook for the bill’s lack of movement prior to driving to Bonnen’s house. McNutt told local media outlets that Bonnen’s response was a "deliberate overreaction."
“If politicians like Speaker Dennis Bonnen think they can show up at the doorsteps of Second Amendment supporters and make promises to earn votes in the election season, they shouldn't be surprised when we show up in their neighborhoods to insist they simply keep their promises in the legislative session," he said.
