WASHINGTON — An attorney representing President Donald Trump says a congressional request for Trump’s tax returns “would set a dangerous precedent” if granted and that the IRS cannot legally divulge the information.
Democratic Rep. Richard Neal of Massachusetts, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, has asked the IRS to provide six years of Trump’s personal tax returns and the returns for some of his businesses. Democrats are seeking information about Trump’s financial dealings and potential conflicts of interest.
But William Consovoy, whose firm was retained by Trump to represent him on the matter, said in a letter Friday to the Department of Treasury’s general counsel that the tax code zealously guards taxpayer privacy. He said requests for tax returns “must have a legitimate legislative purpose.”
Consovoy said that Neal’s request for Trump’s tax information is to damage him politically.
“His request is a transparent effort by one political party to harass an official from the other party because they dislike his politics and speech,” Consovoy said.
Neal requested Trump’s personal and business returns in a letter to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig. He asked for returns covering 2013 through 2018. He also asked for the documents in seven days, setting an April 10 deadline.

Boeing to cut 737 Max production in wake of two deadly crashes
Boeing is cutting back production of its 737 Max aircraft as the company continues to face intense scrutiny in the wake of two deadly crashes.
The company announced Friday it will slow production rate from 52 airplanes per month to 42 starting in mid-April, but did not give a timeframe on when the cutback would end.
“We have the responsibility to eliminate this risk, and we know how to do it. As part of this effort, we're making progress on the 737 MAX software update that will prevent accidents like these from ever happening again,” Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg said in a statement Friday.
Boeing said it would not cut jobs amid the slowdown, and said its board will establish a committee to review how the company designs and develops airplanes.
“Safety is our responsibility, and we own it. When the MAX returns to the skies, we've promised our airline customers and their passengers and crews that it will be as safe as any airplane ever to fly,” Muilenburg said.

Ecuador calls claims it will revoke Julian Assange's asylum 'fake news'
Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is showing “ingratitude and disrespect” to the country that has provided him refuge since 2012, the Ecuadorian foreign ministry said late Friday.
That rebuke was delivered as Ecuador denies coordinating with the United Kingdom about the arrest of Assange, who has been sheltering in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for seven years, and said it will not revoke his asylum.
"The Ministry of Foreign Relations and Human Mobility categorically rejects the fake news which had been circulated over these last few days on social media — many of which are being disseminated by an organization linked to Mr. Julian Assange, concerning an imminent termination of the diplomatic asylum which has been extended to him" since 2012, according to a statement from the ministry.
WikiLeaks maintains that Assange is in danger of being handed over to British authorities in order to deflect attention from leaked documents that have sparked a corruption probe against Ecuadorean President Lenin Moreno.
Assange entered the London embassy in 2012, trying to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he faced charges of sexual assault. The WikiLeaks founder, already notorious for leaking of U.S. diplomatic cables in 2010, subsequently played a key role in Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential elections by released emails stolen from Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman, John Podesta.
