Former Auburn University head football coach Tommy Tuberville is running for the U.S. Senate.
Tuberville made the announcement on Twitter today. Tuberville will seek the Republican nomination for the seat held by Sen. Doug Jones, who is running for reelection.
“After more than a year of listening to Alabama’s citizens, I have heard your concerns and hopes for a better tomorrow. I am humbled to announce the next step – I will be a GOP candidate for US Senate,” Tuberville tweeted.
The news of Tuberville’s candidacy had been reported earlier today by Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports.
Tuberville becomes the second Republican to announce his candidacy. U.S. Rep. Bradley Byrne, R-Fairhope, is also running.
Tuberville, an Arkansas native, was Auburn’s head coach from 1999-2008. He also served as head coach at Ole Miss, Texas Tech and Cincinnati.
Jones won the seat in a special election over Roy Moore in December 2017.
Tuberville considered a run for governor in 2017 and started a campaign fundraising committee, but decided not to run.
Seth Morrow, campaign manager for Byrne, issued a statement in response to Tuberville’s announcement.
“Just in the last few days, our campaign has been in Birmingham and Cullman meeting with voters who are ready to replace Chuck Schumer’s Senator with Pro-Trump conservative Bradley Byrne. Nothing any other candidate does will distract Bradley from fighting for Alabama and our values," Morrow said.
