Incoming multi-post.

From Encyclopedia Britannica:

https:// www.britannica.com/biography/Edward-Snowden

Despite a relative lack of formal education and training, Snowden demonstrated an aptitude with computers, and he was hired by the Central Intelligence Agency in 2006. He was given a top secret clearance and in 2007 was posted to Geneva, where he worked as a network security technician under a diplomatic cover.

They also gave him a diplomatic passport. Possible he used this passport to travel to Russia?

Snowden left the CIA for the NSA in 2009. There he worked as a private contractor for the companies Dell and Booz Allen Hamilton. During this time, he began gathering information on a number of NSA activities—most notably, secret surveillance programs that he believed were overly broad in size and scope.

The Dell assignment was in Japan. This info is strangely absent from the encyclopedia entry.

In a subsequent interview with the South China Morning Post, he claimed that the NSA had been hacking into Chinese computers since 2009 and that he had taken a job with Booz Allen Hamilton expressly to obtain information about secret NSA activities.

So basically, Snowden had been planning this for years before his 2013 flight to Hong Kong. This is confirmed in a Wikia page:

http:// military.wikia.com/wiki/Edward_Snowden

Snowden has said that in the 2008 presidential election he voted for a third-party candidate. He has stated he had been planning to make disclosures about NSA surveillance programs at the time, but he decided to wait because he "believed in Obama's promises".

So basically, Snowden had been planning this since before 2008.

In August 2014, as Snowden’s grant of temporary asylum expired, the Russian government awarded him a three-year residence permit (effective August 1), which would allow him to leave the country for up to three months. He was also granted the opportunity to request an extension of that permit and, after five years of residence, to apply for Russian citizenship should he choose to do so.

Meaning his currently being in China has no bearing on his situation in Russia.

From the Talking Points Memo website:

The Guardian reported Snowden spent the last four years working for various outside contractors, “including Booz Allen and Dell.” On Sunday, Booz Allen Hamilton, a major government contractor, confirmed that Snowden had been an employee of the firm for the last few months.

So basically, Snowden was not even working directly for the NSA, but an outside contractor.

Side-Note: Booz-Allen not only contracts for the NSA, but the IRS and Homeland Security as well. Booz-Allen was hacked by annonymous in 2004 resulting in tens of thousands of emails and a full database dump being released on Pirate Bay.

A former senior U.S. intelligence official told the Post it wasn’t clear why a contractor for Booz Allen like Snowden would have would have access to material as sensitive as a court order from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

“I don’t know why he would have had access to those … orders out in Hawaii,” the former official said.

This, to me, means that Snowden should not have even had access to the documents he copied.

From Military.wikia.com:

His next employment was as a National Security Agency (NSA) security guard for the Center for Advanced Study of Language at the University of Maryland,[58] before, he said, joining the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to work on IT security.[59] In May 2006 Snowden wrote in Ars Technica that he had no trouble getting work because he was a "computer wizard". In August he wrote about a possible path in government service, perhaps involving China, but said it "just doesn't seem like as much 'fun' as some of the other places".[55]

Possible Snowden was trying, even then, to expose surveillance?

Snowden left the CIA in 2009 and began work for Dell, a private contractor, inside an NSA facility on a U.S. military base in Japan .[30] Snowden remained on the Dell payroll until early 2013.

Further confirmation of his having worked in Japan.

[64] Persons familiar with the 2013 government investigation into Snowden's history said that Snowden had downloaded sensitive NSA material in April 2012.[65] NSA Director Keith Alexander has said that Snowden held a position at the NSA for the twelve months prior to his next job as a consultant,[66] with top secret Sensitive Compartmented Information clearances.

Further confirmation that Snowden had been planning disclosure for years.

[67] According to The New York Times, Snowden took a Certified Ethical Hacker training course in 2010.[68] USIS completed a background check on Snowden in 2011.[69]

Now why would someone who is supposedly such a wizard on computers and, as he claims, had access to whatever he wanted due to his being so well-respected by his supervisors need to take a hacking class?

Snowden described his life as "very comfortable", earning a salary of "roughly US$200,000".[70] At the time of his departure from the United States in May 2013, he had been employed by consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton for less than three months inside the NSA at the Kunia Regional SIGINT Operations Center in Hawaii,[71][72][73] earning $122,000.[74] While intelligence officials have described his position there as a "system administrator", Snowden has said he was an "infrastructure analyst", which meant that his job was to look for new ways to break into Internet and telephone traffic around the world.[75] He said he had taken a pay cut to work at Booz Allen,[76] and that he sought employment in order to gather data on NSA surveillance around the world so he could leak it.[77] firm said Snowden's employment was terminated on June 10, 2013 "for violations of the firm's code of ethics and firm policy".[74][78]

So basically, we have a guy that, according to him, took a pay cut to $200,000 a year in order to collect data on the NSA for the express purpose of leaking it.

He also, once again, inflates his importance at the NSA (claiming he was an 'infrastructure analyst' while Booz-Allen says he was a system administrator).

My guess would be the the infrastructure analyst claim was to hide the fact that he actually hacked the servers in order to get to the documents (which would explain the hacking class in 2010). This was possibly in an attempt to avoid the government from being able to also charge him with criminal hacking (which would be the least of the charges he could be brought up on).

-End-
