US forces were dramatically evacuated from the Libyan capital on Sunday as fighting raged in the city between militia allied to the UN-backed government of Tripoli and the self-styled Libyan National Army led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the leading military figure from the east.

Footage on social media showed two fast US navy transport craft manoeuvring off a beach in Janzour in Tripoli’s western suburbs, sending up plumes of spray as American forces were ferried from the shore.

The evacuation came after three days of fighting on the southern outskirts of the city as Haftar’s forces continued their assault and expelled militias aligned with the UN-backed government of national accord (GNA). . In an escalation at the weekend, both sides launched airstrikes, with Tripoli residents reporting indiscriminate artillery fire hitting homes across the capital.

The evacuation is the first public acknowledgement that the US has forces in Libya, with the US Africa Command saying in a statement: “Due to increased unrest in Libya a contingent of US forces supporting US Africa Command temporarily relocated from the country in response to security conditions on the ground.”

The unnamed man was in a group of several poachers stalking endangered rhino in South Africa's Kruger National Park when they were ambushed by a furious pachyderm on Tuesday evening.

Twice as many foreigners as last year gathered in Pyongyang Sunday for the city's annual marathon, tour firms said, as reduced tensions see visitor numbers rise in isolated North Korea.

The event – part of the celebrations for the anniversary of founder Kim Il Sung's birth in 1912 – is the highlight of the North's tourism calendar and offers the chance to run or jog through the streets of the tightly controlled city.

Around 950 Westerners entered the event, according to market leader Koryo Tours, compared to some 450 last year when numbers slumped.

The vast majority of tourists to the North are Chinese and some 5,000 Westerners a year used to visit the North – with about 20 percent of those from the U.S. – seeking unique adventures in one of the most closed countries in the world.

Republican mega-donor and casino magnate Sheldon Adelson was pictured wearing the branded Jewish headpiece at the conference, which was held at one of his hotels, the Venetian. An image of Adelson donning the yarmulke was shared widely on Twitter, where many remarked that he looked like he had similar hair to the president.

This isn’t the first time the religious headpiece has been turned into political branding. At the 2016 American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) convention, red ‘Trump 2016’ yarmulkes were a big hit. The Ted Cruz, John Kasich, Hillary Clinton, and Bernie Sanders ones didn’t sell so well.
