Nancy Pelosi is awarded the 2019 Kennedy Profile in Courage award
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will receive the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award at a ceremony next month, the Kennedy Library Foundation announced Sunday.
The California Democrat is being recognized for leading “with strength, integrity and grace under pressure — using her power to protect the most vulnerable of our citizens,” former ambassador Caroline Kennedy, the foundation’s honorary president, said in a statement.
“She is the most important woman in American political history and is a true Profile in Courage,” Kennedy said.
The award, created in 1989, is among the most prestigious in politics. It is meant to identify heirs to the people profiled by President John F. Kennedy in his 1957 book, “Profiles in Courage.”
Winners are chosen each year by a bipartisan committee of political, business and academic leaders. Previous recipients include New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu (D), the late senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) and former presidents Barack Obama, Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush.
In announcing this year’s award, the foundation cited Pelosi’s work spearheading the 2010 Affordable Care Act, Democrats’ subsequent loss of the House, and Pelosi’s “persistence and determination as she set out to rebuild the Democratic Party in the image of America” and eventually reclaim the speakership last year.
Pelosi called the award “a powerful testament to the extraordinary legacy and leadership of President Kennedy.”
“At President Kennedy’s inauguration, I was blessed to hear him speak of ‘the energy, the faith, the devotion . . . that will light our country and all who serve it — and the glow from that fire can truly light the world,’ ” Pelosi said in a statement. “It is inspiring that the award itself is a lantern, a manifestation of that light.”
Caroline Kennedy and Jack Schlossberg, the foundation’s president and a grandson of the late president, will present the award to Pelosi at a ceremony May 19 at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston.

Prospective jurors for the upcoming NXIVM racketeering trial in Brooklyn federal court were asked questions about all three subjects – and more – in a questionnaire distributed to pre-screen the jury pool. The questionnaire is available for all to see through the public court file.
"These questions are not meant to ask unnecessarily about personal matters," the questionnaire stated, noting it is about whether jurors can be objective. "Remember there are no 'right' or 'wrong' answers; there are only truthful answers."
Of course, depending on which way one answers the questions, the attorneys and judge could decide if they are "right" or "wrong" for the trial, which will begin April 29.
"Have you or anyone close to you ever taken any Scientology courses?" asked one question.
If yes, it asked to describe the experience.
The Church of Scientology, the secretive and controversial religious movement founded by author L. Ron Hubbard and now closely associated with actor Tom Cruise, has drawn parallels to NXIVM, including labels that it is a cult (which it denies).
Jurors were asked if they had any relatives who took courses for Landmark Forum, another self-help organization.
The next question posed to would-be jurors noted there may be evidence at trial about "people engaging in relationships with multiple sexual partners."
"Would hearing about that type of evidence affect your ability to serve as a fair and impartial juror in this case?" the questionnaire asked.
The next question asked: "There may be evidence in this case about abortions. Would hearing about that type of evidence affect your ability to serve as a fair and impartial juror in this case?"
The questionnaire continued, "Have you or has anyone close to you ever sought treatment (court-ordered or otherwise) for sex addiction or sexual deviance?"
The questionnaire also asked potential jurors if they or anyone close to them had been a registered sex offender, a victim of a sex crime or if they know someone who has been a victim.
"Do you believe that people under seventeen should be able to consent to sex with adults?" it asked.
"Have you heard of the '#MeToo' movement?," the questionnaire asked.
It was a reference to the international movement to promote awareness and expose perpetrators of sex crimes and sexual harassment.
At one point, the questionnaire touched upon the allegations in the case that women were physically branded as part of a secret sex cult within NXIVM. It noted evidence may be about skin modifications, such as branding and tattoos.
"Do you have any body modifications?" it asked. "Would hearing about evidence of body modifications affect your ability to serve as a fair and impartial juror in this case?"
The questionnaire asked the would-be jurors about their thoughts on the wealthy – and people who don't pay taxes.
"There may be evidence in this case about rich individuals. Do you have any opinions regarding rich individuals that would affect your ability to serve as a fair and impartial juror in this case? " it asked.

Seagrams' heiress Clare Bronfman, television actress Allison Mack and NXIVM bookkeeper Kathy Russell are scheduled to go to trial before Senior Judge Nicholas Garaufis.
Jurors were told in the questionnaire that the case allegations include identity theft, wire fraud, obstruction of justice, visa fraud, forced labor, sex trafficking, extortion, money laundering, child exploitation and possession of child pornography.
The questionnaire also asked the other usual inquiries: whether the potential jurors have a criminal record, a financial hardship making it difficult to serve, if they have relatives or people they know involved somehow in the case.
It asked jurors to name the last three books they read, the three people they most and least admire, where they get their news from and to name their favorite television shows — which given that Mack was on the show "Smallville" — makes sense.
