A respected German analytical TV program opened its latest edition by informing viewers that Russian forces intruded into the Baltics. Was this "fantasy" just juvenile attention-seeking, or crude pro-NATO propaganda?
“Together with European and German allies, the US army is currently moving through land, air and sea to Estonia to expel Russian forces, which have once again invaded, as in Crimea before,” announced a worried Claus Kleber, host of heute journal, on the national public broadcaster ZDF Thursday night.
As millions of viewers tensed up, the veteran host announced that it was a “gotcha!”
“Do not worry. It is not true. This is just a fantasy scenario – but a realistic one,” said Kleber.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Korean Air’s chairman, whose leadership included scandals such as his daughter’s infamous incident of “nut rage,” has died due to illness, the company said Monday.
Cho Yang-ho had been indicted on multiple charges, including embezzlement and tax evasion, and his death came less than two weeks after a shareholder vote to remove the 70-year-old from the company’s board over a series of scandals surrounding the ruling family.
The company said Cho died in the United States but did not specify his illness or provide other details in its statement on his death. Cho had remained chairman, which is a non-board role, even after shareholders ousted him from the board. He had expressed his intent to continue participating in management.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Michael Busch, a champion of the Chesapeake Bay and progressive causes during his record-tenure as Maryland’s Democratic House speaker, battled for the environment up until the end of his life. He died Sunday at age 72.
His environmental policies were especially high-profile in his final days as he sponsored a bill to permanently protect five oyster sanctuaries under Maryland law. The measure drew a veto from Gov. Larry Hogan, but the House overrode the veto Friday, and the Senate was expected to vote on an override Monday — the last day of the legislative session.
Bush died after developing pneumonia arising from a follow-up procedure to a 2017 liver transplant after being diagnosed with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, a liver disease. He also had heart bypass surgery in September, after experiencing shortness of breath. Chief of staff Alexandra Hughes said Busch died surrounded by loved ones.

Germany’s first democracy, the Weimar Republic of 1919-1933, has long been regarded as a lesson in political failure. Lately, it has also been held up as a cautionary tale for the present.
It emerged from the ruins of World War I, as a defeated nation tried to reinvent itself in the midst of economic and social turmoil. It ended with Adolf Hitler’s Nazi party seizing power, persecuting minorities and leading Germany into another calamitous war.
A new exhibition in Berlin, 100 hundred years later, is questioning the perception that the era’s political and economic disaster was inevitable and stressing the lasting impact of the Weimar Republic.
