The details of the story are likely fudged, but I'll give what I understand them to be. A french NGO plucked a Masai boy from his tribe and put him into a French/English school in Narobi. Félicien Kabuga, who financed the Rwandan genocide and helped smuggle in the machetes used from North Korea (from source), was witnessed in a car(entourage) dropping his kid off at the school. He'd fled to Kenya and there was a US bounty on him for a relatively absurd amount of money. It sounds weird that he'd be so blatant about going around town. In any case, the Masai and another 1 or two witnesses were about the share the award, but Kabuga paid off the Kenyans to get out of jail because the Americans didn't or wouldn't take custody. He came after them and killed one with a sledgehammer to the head in a hotel room. The Masai was captured for a while, threatened, then let go. He begged and pleaded with the US embassy. Someone, seems like a spook was his contact, named Scott something…

This went on for a couple years. Threats, captures, etc. so the story goes. IMO, the Masai is not particularly trustworthy for facts for a number of reasons, but it seems that he had some kind of info to leverage his situation. He got into the states finally, and ultimately ended up going to UVA and even UVA Law. Pretty remarkable unless there aren't more missing pieces. In any case, I know of some peace corps folks that served in that area and the Nairobi embassy seems like a clown headquarters for the area. Just throwing it out there…
