A top New Zealand official ripped Facebook bigs Monday — calling them “morally bankrupt pathological liars.’’
John Edwards, head of the country’s Privacy Commission, slammed the social media giant for refusing to establish a delay in Facebook Live, the platform used by a madman to air footage in real time of himself massacring 50 people at two Christchurch mosques.
“Facebook cannot be trusted,” Edwards seethed in a tweet.
“They are morally bankrupt pathological liars who enable genocide (Myanmar), facilitate foreign undermining of democratic institutions,’’ he added, also accusing Facebook of fomenting hate and ethnic cleansing in Myanmar by refusing to crack down on offensive posts.
“[They] allow the live streaming of suicides, rapes, and murders, continue to host and publish the mosque attack video, allow advertisers to target ‘Jew haters’ and other hateful market segments, and refuse to accept any responsibility for any content or harm,” Edwards wrote.
“They #DontGiveAZuck.”
Edwards later told Radio New Zealand that Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg “can’t tell us or won’t tell us, how many suicides are live-streamed, how many murders, how many sexual assaults. I’ve asked Facebook exactly that last week and they simply don’t have those figures or won’t give them to us.”
He later deleted his tweets, saying they were creating “toxic and misinformed traffic.’’
Facebook responded by releasing a recent statement from its chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, that insisted it was trying to crack down on rogue Facebook Live users and online hate overall.
