Mark Meadows: More criminal referrals coming, 'overwhelming evidence' shows DOJ, FBI abuse

Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., teased more criminal referrals against Justice Department and FBI officials on Monday as a colleague of his plans to submit one of his own. House Intelligence Committee ranking member Devin Nunes, R-Calif., announced on Sunday he is ready to send eight criminal referrals to Attorney General William Barr this week related to the origins of the Trump-Russia investigation.

In a tweet, Meadows, a member of the Oversight Committee, said it was the "right move" and hinted that there is more to come. "The right move from @DevinNunes. More criminal referrals to come. And certainly more deserved. Overwhelming evidence shows multiple FBI + DOJ executives abused their power to undermine a duly elected President Trump. They will be held accountable," Meadows said. Like Nunes, Meadows has been a leading GOP investigator of alleged misconduct and bias within the upper echelons of the DOJ and FBI, including the anti-Trump text messages of former FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page.

Last month he told Fox News of the coming release of documents that will "show" U.S. ambassadors conspired with the FBI and the Justice Department to harm President Trump, suggesting they were part of a "Deep State" plot.''' Nunes has not disclosed any names of people ensnared in his referrals on Sunday, but he did break down three categories in which they fall, including conspiracy to lie to Congress and the FISA court.

Nunes also suggested his effort could drastically expand to encompass dozens of people. "We think there's only a few people behind these leaks but there could be multiple people, so on the global leak referral, there could be several individuals," Nunes told Fox News. "When you look at the conspiracy that could get up to a dozen, two dozen people."

Sheriff Scott Israel Was Suspended — He’s Trying To Become Police Chief Somewhere Else

Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis suspended Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, but Israel is still a candidate for a plum law enforcement position in another county.

I am pleased that the court recognizes my authority as governor to suspend a public official for reasons of neglect of duty and incompetence. Now, I will ask the Florida Senate to move forward with the process of the formal removal of Scott Israel. — Ron DeSantis (@GovRonDeSantis) April 4, 2019

“Sheriff Israel was elected by the people of Broward County to serve as sheriff through the election of 2020,” Israel’s attorney, Bob Kuehne, said Monday. “He fully intends to fulfill the will of Broward voters. He fully intends to serve in the capacity of sheriff of Broward County, and is currently challenging the governor’s action in suspending him for reasons Sheriff Israel maintains are not supported by the Florida Constitution.”

But even while he fights to get reinstated, a commissioner from one county over is pushing hard for him to become police chief of Opa-locka.

According to a report from the Miami Herald, Opa-locka Commissioner Alvin Burke has been lobbying for Israel — and Interim City Manager Newall J. Daughtrey is opposed. Daughtrey also reportedly sent Burke an email that suggested the commissioner had been pressuring him to fire the current police chief in order to make room for Israel. ''Please understand that I cannot follow your directive to terminate the chief of police and hire Scott Israel at this time for reasons discussed.''

Even if Burke gets his way, however, Israel will face one more roadblock: all city hires must be approved by the city’s oversight board, which is overseen by DeSantis.

DeSantis, for his part, is not backing down either. He explained on Friday, “Scott Israel continues to live in denial. The court has recognized my authority as governor to suspend him for neglect of duty and incompetence and this appeal is just his latest delay tactic.”

From the position that these gentalmen sit in the referrals carry quite a bit of clout. This also is their only option as they themselves do not have any arresting authority. They can investigate share their evidence and suggest they be legally investigated by those arresting authorities.

Corrupt UAW Official Was DNC Superdelegate

Union VP pleaded guilty in federal corruption probe

A disgraced union official may have to submit his ballot to the 2020 Democratic National Convention from prison. Former United Auto Workers vice president Norwood Jewell became the highest ranking labor official to plead guilty to violating federal labor law. Jewell admitted to receiving luxury goods and lavish golf trips from the Chrysler executives he was supposed to be negotiating against. He is now staring at a possible five-year prison sentence, though the Detroit News has reported that prosecutors are seeking only 15 months of jail time.

Even with the reduced sentence, Jewell may still be in federal prison when the Democrats' presidential nominating convention begins in Milwaukee. Jewell served as a superdelegate during the 2016 primary battle between Hillary Clinton and insurgent socialist senator Bernie Sanders. He is still listed as a DNC member on the Michigan Democratic Party's website with his term set to expire in 2020. Federal authorities announced indictments against top labor officials in 2017. Jewell, the UAW's lead negotiator for Chrysler, was implicated in the scandal in January 2018 and indicted in March 2019 before pleading guilty on Tuesday. Neither the DNC nor the state party returned requests for comment about Jewell's status within the organization.

Republicans criticized Democratic leaders for maintaining ties with Jewell in the wake of the guilty plea. RNC spokesman Michael Joyce pointed to the fact that some of the allegations against Jewell took place even while he was serving as a party leader. While Jewell did not publicly announce his support in the Sanders-Clinton race, the superdelegate process was criticized by Sanders supporters for rigging the contest in Clinton's favor. Sanders won the Michigan primary 49.8 percent to 47.3 percent, but Clinton earned more delegates. "Democrats are keeping someone who's headed to prison on their leadership team in Michigan, and it shows that corruption is alive and well within their ranks," Joyce said. "After all, these are the same people who rigged the 2016 primary election against Bernie Sanders."

The corruption probe has dealt a blow to UAW leadership for the past several years and led the union to begin adopting reforms to curb the appearance of conflicts of interest and corruption. It has emphasized its cooperation with federal probers throughout the process. The union said in a statement that "Jewell exhibited poor judgment" in his dealings with Chrysler executives. "This is a troubling moment for our organization, and our members are appropriately angry and frustrated. Our members will always be our highest authority, and so we pledge to continue to change the way that we do business," the UAW said. "Our Clean Slate reforms are being implemented, and will be expanded. These reforms will make sure that transparency and accountability are at the forefront, and will bring this chapter to a close, once and for all."
