Mysterious E. Coli Outbreak Spreads To 5 States; 96 People Infected

A mysterious E. Coli outbreak outbreak of unknown provenance has now spread to five states, and infected 96 people, the CDC disclosed on Tuesday.

As of April 8, the states include Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia, according to law firm publication the Food Poison Journal.

The source of the outbreak has not yet been determined. Though late last year, another E. coli outbreak prompted supermarkets around the country to destroy supplies of romaine lettuce after the outbreak was traced to tainted lettuce tied to a California farm.

Illnesses tied to the current outbreak were first reported on March 2, 2019, to March 26, 2019. The infected have ranged in age from 1 to 81 years, with a median age of 17, just over half of whom have been women. No deaths have been reported, but 11 people have been hospitalized.

State and local public health officials have been interviewing the victims to try and determine what they ate and how they might have been exposed to the virus in the week before they fell ill. In addition to locals, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, the US Food and Drug Administration, and the CDC have all been investigating the outbreak.

"This investigation is still ongoing, and a specific food item, grocery store, or restaurant chain has not been identified as the source of infections. State and local public health officials are interviewing ill people to determine what they ate and other exposures in the week before their illness started," the CDC said.

People infected with E. coli typically start experiencing symptoms two to eight days after exposure, according to Newsweek. Most people take a week to recover.

While the infection typically doesn't require hospitalization, E. coli can lead to a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can be deadly.

Symptoms include bloody diarrhea, as well as cramps and vomiting. Some might experience a low-grade fever. People can protect themselves by washing their hands and cooking meat, vegetables and fruit thoroughly.

They can also avoid smoking street marijuana, which has recently been found to contain a surprising quantity of human feces, the NYP reports.

Libya

Pro-GNA Forces Launch Counter-Attack In Attempt To Take Back Tripoli Airport

In the evening of April 8, a coalition of militias loyal to the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) launched a counter-attack against the advancing Libyan National Army (LNA) forces in the area of Tripoli International Airport.

According to reports, pro-GNA forces were able to re-enter the airport area and even recaptured several positions there. Another direction of the counter-attack was the area south of Swani.

On April 9, LNA units will likely focus on repelling the GNA counter-offensive and retaking the area of the airport as well as the town of Swani. In the even of the success this would allow the LNA to shorten frontline south of Tripoli.

Tripoli Airport Remains Contested As Libyan National Army Openes New Front Near Sirte

On April 8th, the spokesman for the Libyan National Army (LNA), Major General Ahmed Al-Mismari said that the army took control of Tripoli International Airport, Yarmouk Camp and Wadi Al-Rabie.

“Tripoli International Airport is fully under the control of the army forces of the General Command,” he said at a press conference.

The announcement happened just as the 9th force from Abu Salim said the Tripoli International Airport was allegedly under the control of the Government of National Accord (GNA).

Al-Mismari also said that the GNA Air Force bomber that flew out of Misrata air base struck a farm that was previously owned by Muammar Gaddafi in the Sawknah area. According to him, the farm was a civilian target, completely free of any military forces and not a supply base. There were no casualties.

It’s Time For John Bolton To Go

Has there ever been a single individual in the Trump administration who has caused more damage to the President’s agenda?

The very fact that John Bolton ended up as an employee of President Donald Trump’s is somewhat of a surprise. Bolton is a former Bush administration official who served as ambassador to the United Nations and has a foreign policy outlook that is the polar opposite of the one expressed by the President during his 2016 campaign. Bolton’s hawkish views and his tendency to subvert anyone he personally feels poses a threat to American security and interests make him an extreme danger to the current government. A failure to replace him will leave Trump unable to secure the promises he made to his constituents about curtailing foreign wars and creating new economic opportunities for the United States.

I. Bolton’s Rise To Power

John Bolton ascended to power amid the vacuum created by the ousting of former National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster. This merely resulted in an acceleration of the kinds of policies that caused McMaster’s firing in the first place. McMaster had drawn Trump’s ire by advocating for continued US involvement in Syria and worked with Vice President Mike Pence to pressure Trump into increasing the amount of American troops deployed in Afghanistan. His preferences went explicitly against those of the President. He was also disliked by Chief of Staff John Kelly, who had wanted McMaster out but did not want Bolton as a replacement and has reportedly clashed with him repeatedly.

Bolton was heavily promoted by a number of parties who dislike Trump, making the appointment curious to begin with. The notoriously anti-Trump Lindsey Graham was quick to praise the President’s decision, as was the rest of the GOP foreign policy elite who previously took a strong stance against Trump’s “America First” agenda. Now-fired advisor Steve Bannon was also a reported supporter of Bolton for the position. Observers wondered why Trump, who was against the Iraq War, had just hired one of the war’s biggest supporters.

Bolton immediately angered Trump within weeks of his appointment when he pushed his “Libya model” solution during negotiations with North Korea (DPRK), upsetting their government and nearly derailing the entire process. This behavior led to Bolton being sidelined by Trump to preserve the denuclearization talks with the DPRK. It has long been known that John Bolton, an old Cold Warrior unable to adapt with changing times, loves to sabotage international agreements that he feels are undermining American sovereignty and security. With Trump’s decision to sideline, but not fire Bolton, he made an enemy who has since spent the entirety of his time as an administration employee sabotaging the President’s agenda and attempting to manipulate him into making decisions that will alienate him from his base while sabotaging America’s reputation abroad.
