If you are talking about health insurance, then FYI it is voluntary in my country. Only reason it's mandatory in US I am guessing is because of the high healthcare costs. But healthcare providers in my country are also trying to copy US providers and increasing costs.
Auto insurance is indeed mandatory in my country but many people drive without insurance anyway. Kinda like Mexicans in US. :)
