BREAKING NEWS: One dead and 15 injured in North Carolina explosion after contractor drills into gas line under the sidewalk and blows up a building

The explosion happened in downtown Durham, North Carolina, on Wednesday morning

A contractor was drilling into the sidewalk and hit a two inch gas line while investigating a leak

It blew up a building that houses a coffee shop and a psychiatrist's office and caused damage to others

Residents said they heard a loud 'boom' and felt the ground shake at the time of the explosion

The area has been sealed off while fire fighters try to put out the blaze and 15 people are in the hospital

Some of them are in intensive care and the mayor has said that the death toll could rise

One person has died and 15 are injured after a gas explosion in North Carolina which was caused by a contractor who hit a gas line in the sidewalk while investigating a leak.

The explosion happened in downtown Durham at 10.27am on Wednesday and brought a building that houses a coffee shop and a psychiatrist's office.

It is unconfirmed if the contractor is the person who died.

Fifteen people have been taken to the hospital and a fire fighter was severely injured in the explosion which caused the ground to shake and windows on neighboring buildings to shatter

(The entire therapy center, which offers group and individual sessions, was reduced to rubble and is still on fire )

'A gas leak was caused by a contractor who was boring under the sidewalk.

'He hit a two inch gas line which caused an explosion and also a partial building collapse,' Will Glenn, a spokesman for the Durham Police Department, said.

The building is used partly by Main Street Clinical Associates and Dr. Hollister Trott, a psychiatrist, and Kaffeinate, a coffee shop.

It is unclear how many people were inside at the time. Residents described hearing a 'boom' and feeling the ground shake at the time of the blast.

'I've never seen anything like it before. I was sitting at the traffic lightโ€ฆand I smelled heavy, heavy gas.

'There were people in the building. I saw a business owner but a sign that said 'Business is closed for the day because of a gas leak."

'As soon as I went through the traffic light, the whole building exploded,'Robin Jarvi told WTVD.

 

Among the injured were employees at Duke University who were injured by shattered glass. The university does not have buildings in the area.
