The unidentified student stumbled upon the adult remains in a wooded area behind a building on Riverview High School's campus in Searcy on Tuesday.
It's unclear when the remains were placed in the woods, but police believe they may have been there for years, according to FOX16.
They have been sent to a state crime lab where investigators will cross-reference the DNA with nationwide missing persons cases.
School district officials addressed the gruesome discovery in a Facebook post on Tuesday.
'Searcy Police Department and White Co Sheriff's Office responded to a report of adult human remains in the woods behind the administration building on the high school campus,' the post said.
'A student discovered the remains and reported it to police. The remains have not been identified.'
They did not provide any additional details about how the student came across the remains.
