Judge Denies ACLU Request To Help SPLC In McInnes 'Proud Boys' Lawsuit
An Alabama judge on Tuesday struck down a bid by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to help the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) defend itself against a lawsuit filed by Gavin McInnes, the founder of the 'Proud Boys' - a fraternal organization which the SPLC labeled a hate group.
The SPLC says the group is "known for anti-Muslim and misogynistic rhetoric," and that members "maintain affiliations with known extremists."
McInnes hit back - filing a defamation lawsuit in early February which claims that the 'hate group' label is false and has damaged his career.
In response to the ACLU's amicus curiae Brief - which allows non-parties in a case to offer supporting information - US District Judge Myron H. Thompson ruled that "the court is convinced that both sides of this case can adequately present and argue the issues without outside assistance."
Prior to Thompson's decision, McInnes' counsel argued that the SPLC is "essentially, a law firm, and -as is well known - a very effective one, and one endowed with phenomenal financial resources, and noted that the ACLU "have not identified any special abilities or expertise that is not already available to the SPLC."
Last June, the SPLC agreed to apologize and pay $3.4 million to a British group and its founder after the Alabama-based organization labeled them anti-Muslim extremists.
The SPLC's downward spiral
The SPLC has a long and sordid history of labeling mainstream Christian and conservative organizations as "hate groups" - including the Alliance Defending Freedom, Family Research Council, the Ruth Institute, the David Horowitz Freedom Center, and Jihad Watch, according to Life Site's Calvin Freilburger.
Meanwhile, more than two-dozen employees signed a letter of concern over "allegations of mistreatment, sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and racism" within the organization following the ouster of co-founder Morris Dees over sexual misconduct claims.
Weeks after Dees' departure, the head of the SPLC, Richard Cohen, as well as the organization's legal director, Rhonda Brownstein, resigned.

An 83-year-old ex-doctor convicted of illegally prescribing more than 2.2 million Oxycodone pills and other opioids — leading to the overdose death of a 26-year-old Staten Island man — will likely die behind bars, after a judge sentenced him to 20 years in a federal prison.
‘Oxy Doc’ convicted of giving pills to drug-addicted patients
Upper East Side “Oxy doc” (((Martin Tesher))) was stone-faced as he learned his fate, following an hour-long hearing in which the dead man’s sister Krystal Benedetto blasted the former physician as a “drug pushing animal,” who ignored her calls to his office when she suspected her late brother Nicholas Benedetto was abusing drugs.
But her messages went ignored, and she said: “Nick fell victim to malpractice, to (((Tesher's))) greed.”
“Patients came to him at their most vulnerable,” Assistant US Attorney Jennifer Sasso told the Brooklyn federal courtroom, which was packed with the ex-doctor’s friends and former patients. “And he did what a common drug dealer would do, he filled them with pills, an astronomical number of pills. Literally millions of pills.”
“This is worse than a common street dealer,” the prosecutor said, urging Brooklyn federal Judge Raymond Dearie to sentence (((Tesher))) to 20 years to life in prison.
In his own self-serving statement, (((Tesher))) tried to cast blame on his own victim, saying “he was on a great deal of opioids when he came to my office,” and said the prescriptions for Fentanyl he wrote for Benedetto, three days before his 2016 death, were a “lower” dose.
“Why would I jeopardize my life’s work and risk my reputation by doing something that was criminal?” he told the court Tuesday.
Defense attorney Eric Creizman said that being a doctor had given his client’s “life meaning, it gave him purpose,” and that he’d watched (((Tesher))) “deteriorate, psychically and emotionally,” since he lost his medical license.
Dearie said he’d tried to find room for leniency, based on (((Tesher's))) age and host of medical conditions, but was still obligated to sentence him to a mandatory minimum of 20 years tied to the patient’s death.
“If this sentence doesn’t deter people, we’re out of business,” Dearie lamented, shaking his head. “A young man died. It should not have happened, it should not have happened,”
“I have a picture of a doctor painted in these letters,” he told a courtroom packed with the ex-doctor’s supporters. “But you obviously know a different Dr. (((Tesher))) than I have become acquainted with at trial.”
(((Tesher))) was convicted in July 2018 on multiple counts of unlawful distribution of Oxycodone without a legitimate medical purpose as well as a single count of unlawful distribution of Oxycodone and Fentanyl that resulted in a patient’s death. His license was immediately stripped and he went off on both the jury and his own victimized patients outside court.
“I don’t want to be insulting to the jury, but they clearly had no clue,” (((Tesher))) told The Post afterwards. “I’ve been in practice for 55 years; these are people who knew nothing about medicine. And calling calling me a murderer because [Benedetto] decided to wildly overdose? Please.”
In the same breath, he called a former patient who’d taken the stand against him a “prick.”
(((Tesher))) declined to comment as he left court Tuesday, accompanied by his wife and supporters. He’s been instructed to surrender to the Bureau of Prisons on Aug. 8.
Benedetto said she was pleased with the sentence, after everything her family had been through.
“He’s going to spend his last day in jail, so that sort of evens it out a little,” she stated. “I don’t think he loses a moment of sleep at night.”

Over 50 Christian and Muslim sites have been vandalized in Israel and the West Bank since 2009, but only nine indictments have been filed and only seven convictions handed down, according to Public Security Ministry data. Moreover, only eight of the 53 cases are still under investigation, with the other 45 all closed.
The ministry data only goes through July 2017, but the vandalism hasn’t ended.
The latest attack occurred last Wednesday, at St. Stephen’s Church in the Beit Jamal Monastery, near Beit Shemesh. Many items were broken, including some of the stained glass windows and a status of the Virgin Mary. Police are investigating, but so far no suspects have been arrested and the motive is said to be unknown.
This was the third such attack on the monastery in the last five years. In 2013, a firebomb was thrown at a door and hateful slogans were scrawled on the walls. And about 18 months ago, gravestones were vandalized in the cemetery. No suspects were arrested in those cases, either.
The wave of vandalism peaked in 2013, the data show. That year, 11 investigations were opened and five people were convicted. Also that year, the police opened a special hate crimes unit in their Judea and Samaria District. But judging by the data, the unit’s deterrent effect has been minimal.

A New Jersey rabbi found guilty of laundering $200,000 from a private school for children with developmental disabilities was sentenced Monday afternoon to two years probation.
Osher Eisemann, 62, founded the Lakewood-based School for Children with Hidden Intelligence during the 1990s, inspired by his own son’s special needs. He was found guilty in February of second degree charges of money laundering and misconduct by a corporate official at the close of a four-week trial.
The second degree charges can carry sentences of five to 10 years in state prison, but Judge Benjamin Bucca found the mitigating factors outweighed the aggravating factors in the sentencing, moving him to hand down the rare sentence of probation, which skirted mandatory minimums.
“At this stage in this man’s life, I cannot imagine that this situation could ever occur again," Bucca said. “The seriousness of the allegations and the harm that occurred is much less than what this court typically sees with other second degree crimes.”
The jury acquitted Eisemann of other charges, including corruption of public resources, theft by unlawful taking and misapplication of entrusted property. The private school’s fundraising foundation, Services for Hidden Intelligence, LLC, was also acquitted of all charges against it, authorities said.

Bucca also said he hopes Eisemann can return to the school, despite the second degree conviction, and hopes the state Department of Education will consider making an exception, given Eisemann’s decades-long reputation.

But what has emerged indicates that the alleged intelligence does not actually reflect any dramatic new information or analysis from the US intelligence community. Instead, it has all the hallmarks of a highly political case concocted by Bolton.
Further underscoring the deceptive character of Bolton’s maneuver is evidence that senior Israeli national security officials played a key role in creating the alleged intelligence rationale for the case.
The new initiative follows an audacious ruse carried out last fall by Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, detailed in Truthdig in February, to cast the firing of a few mortar rounds in the vicinity of the US Embassy and a consulate in Iraq as evidence of an effort by Tehran to harm US diplomats. Bolton exploited that opportunity to press Pentagon officials to provide retaliatory military options, which they did, reluctantly.
Bolton and Pompeo thus established a policy that the Trump administration would hold Iran responsible for any incident involving forces supported by Iran that could be portrayed as an attack on either US personnel or US“interests.”

In the past decade alone, Israel has gone to war with Hamas three times — in 2009, 2012, and 2014 — killing around 2,500 Palestinian civilians in Gaza in the process. Meanwhile, Hamas has killed far more Israeli civilians than any secular Palestinian militant group. This is the human cost of blowback.
“When I look back at the chain of events, I think we made a mistake,” David Hacham, a former Arab affairs expert in the Israeli military who was based in Gaza in the 1980s, later remarked. “But at the time, nobody thought about the possible results.”

An ex-Israeli soldier wanted in Colombia for heading a child prostitution ring and sex trafficking offences has been arrested in Portugal.
Forty-five-year-old Assi Ben-Mosh – also known as Assi Moosh – was arrested near the Portuguese capital Lisbon on Wednesday during an operation by Spain’s Guardia Civil police force. The Guardia Civil said in a statement that Ben-Mosh is thought to have been hiding on the Spanish island of Ibiza, and then in Barcelona, before eventually being arrested in Portugal this week. It added that Ben-Mosh had been using a fake Israeli ID, the Times of Israel reported yesterday.
Ben-Mosh is wanted by Colombian authorities for running a child prostitution ring in the small fishing village of Taganga, located on the South American country’s Caribbean coast. He, along with a group of ex-Israeli soldiers, reportedly turned the luxury Benjamin Hostel into a “sex and drug den” in which more than 250 underage girls were subjected to sexual exploitation.
The Benjamin Hostel became known to locals as “little Israel”, and acted as a base from which Ben-Mosh ran similar clubs exploiting children in Cartagena, Medellín and the Colombian capital Bogotá. His empire is also thought to have extended to Ecuador, Mexico and Brazil.
In November 2017 Ben-Mosh was deported from Colombia after the authorities labelled him a threat to public order and the security of the state. At the time, local sources reported that he was arrested after arriving at the immigration office in nearby Santa Marta, accompanied by a group of armed men. It was believed he had been trying to obtain Colombian citizenship.
According to Colombia’s national police, Ben-Mosh had raised suspicion after it was discovered that his permits for tourism and hotel operation were obtained through a third party, enabling him to carry out criminal activities undetected for a decade. He was returned to Tel Aviv under escort by immigration officers.
However, in July 2018 Colombian authorities asked Interpol to arrest Ben-Mosh, believing he had continued to manage his illicit operations from afar despite his deportation. The international arrest warrant stated that Ben-Mosh was wanted for drug trafficking, money laundering and trafficking of human beings for the purpose of sexual exploitation.
The call came after three Israelis and 15 others were arrested on suspicion of involvement in sex trafficking in the tourist city of Cartagena. They were arrested from Benjamin Hostel, another establishment of the same name as that run by Ben-Mosh in Taganga.
It is not yet clear whether Ben-Mosh will be extradited to Colombia following his arrest.

The SIPRI report described Israel’s nuclear arsenal as follows: 30 gravity bombs capable of delivering nuclear weapons by fighter jets; an additional 50 warheads that can be delivered by land-based ballistic missiles; and an unknown number of nuclear-armed, sea-launched cruise missiles that would grant Israel a sea-based second-strike capability.
In total, the SIPRI report estimated that Israel possesses between 80 and 90 nuclear weapons, an increase over previous years. SIPRI was unable, however, to confirm those estimates with Israel’s government, which has a long-standing policy of refusing to comment on its nuclear weapons program — a policy it describes as “nuclear ambiguity.”
As a result of this “nuclear ambiguity” policy, the actual number of Israeli nuclear weapons is unknown. Some other organizations, such as the U.S.-based Nuclear Threat Initiative, have estimated that Israel has produced enough weapons-grade plutonium to arm between 100 and 200 nuclear warheads.
